Mark Spiteri claims crown at first attempt – Title No. 5 for Josephine Borg

The 6th annual MTBA National Senior Championships (50yrs plus) have been completed at the Eden SuperBowl, where Mark Spiteri managed to beat the rest of the field at his very first attempt in this event, having turned 50 earlier this year. In the Ladies Division, Josephine Borg managed to retain her 2014 title, and so make it an excellent five Senior victories from six.

Ladies’ Division: Borg proves too strong for competition

Defending Ladies’ Champion Josephine Borg has missed out on only one Seniors since the Championships’ inception in 2010, when she lost out to her namesake, Josephine Bonello in 2013, and proceeded to lead the pack from the opening frames of the 2015 edition.

Borg was in control after her 190 opening effort in the six-game series, consolidating that early lead with a better 213 in game two. After a lower 161 in game three, she shot her best of the event with a 224 in the fourth, and the title was as good as hers already.

Josephine saw out a winning 1139 set (net 1067), to hold on to her MTBA Senior crown, finishing 141 pins better than nearest rival Marthese Cossai, while Mary Galea took the bronze position on 962.

Men’s Division: ‘Youngster’ Spiteri in convincing victory

The men’s competition is the toughest of the two, and 2014 Champion Paul Baldacchino knew that Senior new-boy Mark Spiteri would definitely be gunning for him in this the latter’s first Senior Championship. In fact the latter was very quick to make an impression, shooting a 244 in the first, swiftly followed by a 247 and a great 268 in the 2nd and 3rd respectively (759 for three).

That put Mark way ahead of the field at the half way point, and then he was given a somewhat unexpected  challenge from Joseph Cassar, who shot an impressive 239 and 267 on the back of his 623 front three to narrow the gap, but he remained 94 down on Spiteri with just one game remaining.

Mark confirmed his first Seniors title with a 213 against a 184 from Joseph, winning with a 1436 total (239 ave). Cassar held on to second place with his gross 1313, while Paul Baldacchino took third on 1276 pins.

Other than taking home the Senior Championship titles, the two winners were awarded with a free entry apiece for the 2015 Malta Senior Open Championships, courtesy of the Malta Tenpin Bowling Association.
