British Junior Open – Norwich: Huge medal haul for Maltese youths

Over the weekend, a group comprising 18 tenpin bowlers from the MTBA National Youth and Junior Squads, all brimming with enthusiasm, participated in the British Junior Open which was organized at the Namco Funscape Bowling Centre, Norwich. An impressive field of 230 young bowlers, hailing mainly from the British Isles participated in the various age categories, competing in separate Single, Doubles and 4-Man Team events, with the cumulative scores from all three events deciding the overall ‘All Events’ standings.

Not for the first time, the Maltese contingent pulled of a fantastic collective performance, scooping medals in every event according to individual category, as well as in the All Events standings to do their coaches, their association, and also Malta proud. No fewer than ten awards were won, comprising five gold medals, three silver medals, and two bronze.

The enviable Maltese honours list from the 2015 British Junior Open, reads as follows:

Singles Event:

  • Sara Xuereb – GOLD, U-15
  • Edward Xuereb – GOLD, U-13
  • Kurt Attard – SILVER, U-15
  • Ayrton Ciangura – BRONZE, U-13
  • Michaela Briffa – BRONZE, U-21

Doubles Event:

  • Sara Xuereb & Mathew Magro – GOLD, Intermediates

Team Event:

  • Sara Xuereb, Matthew Magro, Kurt Attard, Nicky Zahra – GOLD, B Divison

All Events:

  • Sara Xuereb – GOLD, U-15
  • Kurt Attard – SILVER, U-15
  • Edward Xuereb – SILVER, U-13

For this latest highly successful foray into the international arena, Team Malta were accompanied by MTBA mentor and ‘second Mum’, Liliana Spiteri, as well as an array of the competitors’ parents, whose moral and vocal support played a big part in their children’s fantastic showing, both on and off the lanes.
