Okmalta.com, last month confirmed as the MSV Life National champions for the second season in a row, have gotten of to a winning start in their campaign for a second title redemption, claiming all eight points against newly promoted Supreme. That makes them joint Division I leaders after just one week of the 18-week long Winter season

An elite line-up of Malta’s finest bowlers is the key for okmalta.com, although their latest league title went down to the wire, only confirmed by an 8 – 0 victory over Turu’s Knights it the final match of the season, such is the red hot competition in the MSV Life National Div I. They clinched it with a final tally of 116 points having dropped only 28 throughout the season, pipping closest rivals Ramis by just four points. Fina finished in third place on 106, ten points behind the champs.

Week one opponents Supreme were left feeling they should have taken some points away from their encounter with okmalta.com, as they lost the opener by just nine pins (675 – 664), before the champions had an easier time in game two, taking it 729 – 679. Game three could again have gone either way, but fell to okmalta.com in a 777 – 762 result.

Fina go top – claim new national record with massive 1015 game

Alongside okmalta.com, there were another two full point victories in week one of the brand new season, the most notable being that of Fina against J Grima & Co. The Fina aces showed blistering form from the opening shots of the series, taking game one with an impressive 839 – 687 score line, but that was merely a precursor for what was about to come.

Game two saw a formidable team effort from Fina’s line-up of Sue Abela (234), Mark Muscat (258), Justin Caruana Scicluna (233) and Kenneth Arpa, who banged in ten consecutive strikes on his way to a huge 286 effort. That meant a winning 1015 game against their opponents’ 671, and a brand new national record for the highest ever 4-man game to boot.

Fina slowed the pace a little for a 758 – 641 game three victory to make sure of all eight points, and the top spot on pinfall. Justin Caruana Scicluna beat teammate Arpa over the series with a solid 700 tally, while Kenneth finished on 662.

Ramis are in second place but also on eight points which they bagged at the expense of The Clan, who are back up in the top flight after winning promotion from Division II last season. They were never really threatened over the three game set, which progressed; 833 – 681, 804 – 678, 845 – 707. Philip Gruppetta (Ramis), 691. Matthew Cossai (The Clan), 530.

Royal Shock’s 6 – 2 victory over Malta International Airport puts them in fourth place in what was something of a ‘topsy turvy’ affair. Royal Shock impressed with an 863 – 730 game one win, but the tables were immediately turned as MIA bounced right back with a 738 – 843 leveller. The edge was reversed again in game three which finished 778 – 740 to confirm the majority win for Royal Shock. Clive Farrugia (Royal Shock), 609. Aaron Belli (Malta International Airpot), 588.

The match between Turu’s Knights and Bello Aluminium ended in a four-all draw, with the Knights losing the first two games (689 – 726, 727 – 732). They then managed to force the draw with a better 792 – 740 game three win to narrowly clinch the series points (2208 – 2183). Claude Camilleri (Turu’s Knights), 588. Cole Cooper (Bello Aluminium) 519.
