Okmalta.com march on with win against nearest rivals, Ramis

Full-point victories for Fina, Turu’s Knights

Week six of the MSV Life National League saw a sixth straight victory for Div I leaders okmalta.com, with second placed Ramis being on the losing side of the 2 – 6 score line. That allowed Fina to close in on Ramis thanks to an 8 – 0 victory over Pin Strikers. There was also a full point victory for Turu’s Knights against Supreme, while the remaining two matches both ended in 4-all ties; Royal Shock vs Blitzkrieg, XS vs Malta International Airport.

Having already thrashed defending champions Fina just a couple of fixtures back, week six saw top team okmalta.com claim another table-top victory (2 – 6) over Ramis, and so extend their league lead to eight points. Okmalta.com took the opening game with relative ease (781 – 874), but then received an instant response from Ramis who came back to go level with an 832 – 786 game two win, although okmalta.com still led the series by 47 pins. Game three produced a fantastic team effort from the winning side for a 744 – 920 score line, putting the match way beyond the reach of Ramis. Neil Sullivan (okmalta.com), 706, Male Bowler of the Week. Mark Spiteri (Ramis), 647.

Third placed Fina grabbed a whole 8 points in their win against Pin Strikers this week, although it was not all plain sailing for last season’s champions. They started in typical style against their keen, young opponents, winning it 802 – 709 for the early lead. They were then given a scare in the second game, just managing to hold onto victory by a mere four pins (693 – 689) for double their lead. Game three was the best of the series for both sides, and fell 833 – 767 to Fina to sew up the 100% victory. Kenneth Arpa (Fina), 641. Shaun Montanaro (Pin Strikers), 576.

Turu’s Knights returned to winning ways in week six, claiming the only other full-pointer of the week, to the detriment of opponents Supreme. They started with a cagey 728 – 753 game on victory, and then had it a little easier in game two, which finished 695 – 743 for 0 – 4 after two. Buoyed by the prospect of their first 8-point victory of the campaign, the Knights improved to win the last of the set, 723 – 803 to complete the whitewash. Tiziana Carannante (Turu’s Knights), 591, Female Bowler of the Week. Sacha Fenech (Supreme), 547.

The clash between XS and Malta International Airport produced the first of two draws this week. It was a match of changing fortunes as XS took the early lead with a 749 – 708 initial victory, but then slipped to a low 618 in game two, allowing MIA onto the scoreboard with their 710 leveller. XS then rallied for a 787 – 757 game three win, but that damaging low second game meant they handed to series points to MIA for the 4-all draw (2154 – 2175). Sara Xuereb (XS), 589. Steve Cassar (Malta International Airport), 574.

Draw number two came from the match, Royal Shock vs Blitzkrieg. Royal Shock were first out of the blocks with a good 798 – 729 game one win, and must have then felt confident of the match as they won the second game 750 – 737, for an 82pin advantage on the three-set. It was then, however, that Blitzkrieg came back with a big 751 – 837 win in the third, and with that, steal the series by just four pins to force the draw (2299 – 2303). David Fenech (Royal Shock), 603. Gunther Micallef Decesare (Blitzkrieg), 588.
