Okmalta.com suffer shock defeat against Supreme

Fina win to go 16 clear, Ramis move into second place

The first week of Round Two was a significant one in the MSV Life National League, as title holders okmalta.com went down in a 6 – 2 result against Supreme. That gave leaders Fina a golden opportunity to streak ahead with a full point win over J Grima & Co for a 16 point cushion, while Ramis replaced okmalta.com in second place with a 2 – 6 win against The Clan. Bello Aluminium claimed an important 8 – 0 win against Turu’s Knights, while there was a 2 – 6 victory for Royal Shock over Malta International Airport.

Outgoing champions okmalta.com suffered a surprise defeat at the hands of Supreme in week ten, paving the way for arch rivals Fina to take further advantage at the top of the table. Supreme were in fighting form as they came out to win the first game 800 – 747, before further stunning their elite opponents with a 751 – 708 game two win, to make it 4 – 0 on the series. Okmalta.com knew they had to get something out of this fixture and they stepped up a gear in game three, winning it 754 – 826 for two points, but missing out on the series and the draw by 24 pins (2305 – 2281). Helenio Grech (Supreme), 578. Rankin Camilleri (okmalta.com), 626.

League leaders Fina took instant advantage of okmalta.com’s misfortunes, with an excellent 2599 series and a full point victory against J Grima & Co. While the latter could barely make an impact on the match, all four of team Fina were on top form, starting with a convincing 766 – 851 opening victory, before doubling their lead with a 698 – 855 game two win. That put the title favourites 242 ahead on the series but as if that wasn’t enough, they then finished off J Grima & Co’s thrashing with an enormous 643 – 893 game three win to complete their massive team series. Sue Abela (Fina), 656 – female male bowler of the week. Kenneth Arpa (Fina), 656 – male bowler of the week. Benny Hili (J Grima & Co), 564.

Ramis were edging every closer to the top two positions during the latter part of round one, and this week managed to leapfrog okmalta.com into second place thanks to their 2 – 6 win against bottom side, The Clan. The match was hotly contested over the first two games, The Clan taking an early lead with an 802 – 774 game one win, only for Ramis to level it after two with their 773 – 786 equalizer. It was all to play for in the deciding third game, but The Clan were unable to maintain the pace, losing it 636 – 741 to had the majority victory to Ramis. Mark Spiteri (Ramis), 607. James Vassallo (The Clan), 548.

Turu’s Knights’ rough patch continued into week ten, as they went down 8 – 0 against strugglers, Bello Aluminium, who were extremely glad of the full-point life line. The Knights were never too far from the points over the three-set, losing game one 754 – 740, and then game two 760 – 735 to go 4 – 0 down. Game three was the most frustrating of all for Turu’s, as in spite of their improved performance, Bello Aluminium still managed to snatch it 792 – 776 to complete the whitewash. Nicholas Zahra (Bello Aluminium), 584. Tiziana Carannante (Turu’s Knights), 590.

Royal Shock stay mid-table after a 2 – 6 victory against Malta International Airport this week, but drew level on points with Turu’s Knights with the win. They took the early points with a very tight 738 – 740 opening win but the tables turned on game two, which fell to MIA with just three pins separating the two (757 – 754). It all came down to game three which was a more open affair, Royal Shock winning it 688 – 743 to make sure of the series (2183 – 2237). Pierre Yves Galea (Royal Shock), 568. Steve Cassar (MIA), 559.
