  • Ramis, okmalta.com share the early lead with big wins
  • Champions Fina save face in Turu’s Knights draw

The MSV Life National Bowling League is back at the Eden SuperBowl for the start of another 18-week championship campaign. Thanks to two similar 100% victories, the early lead is shared by Ramis and okmalta.com, the two teams putting on impressive displays against Royal Shock and Malta Int. Airport respectively. Newly promoted Pin Strikers got of to a great start with a 6 – 2 win against XS, and there was a similar victory for Blitzkrieg over Supreme. Re-crowned champions Fina just managed to save their week one blushes with a 4-all draw with Turu’s Knights.

Ramis are top of the Div I table thanks to their better total score, but a mere 10 pins ahead of okmalta.com after identical 8 – 0 wins. Ramis faced Royal Shock and took immediate control with a 762 – 850 opening, maintaining the pace to win the second 793 – 830 and go four ahead. The two outfits produced a humdinger of a final game, which finished 834 – 854 to Ramis for the full eight points. Mark Spiteri (Ramis), 698, male bowler of the week. 604. Joe Cassar (Royal Shock), 604.

Last season’s runners up Okmalta.com opened their new account with an equally impressive 8 – 0 win, starting off with the team game of the night in their 874 – 815 game one win against Malta Int. Airport, the latter having earned an immediate return to the top flight after a season in Div II. MIA were no pushover in the second game either, shooting a sound 783, but were unable to overcome okmalta.com’s 812 which doubled the latter’s’ lead. The 100% win was then confirmed with a final 838 – 659 win for okmalta.com for a great 2534 team total. Rankin Camilleri, Dennis Mercieca (okmalta.com), both 649. Charles Farrugia (MIA), 562.

Fina’s second consecutive title defence did not get off to the winning start they must have hoped for, as they only just managed to salvage a draw from their tight match against Turu’s Knights. The first of the set was a real nail-biter, with the Knights clinching it by a mere two pins (796 – 798) to take a very slender lead. Fina then bounced back to win the second by a slightly better margin (822 – 793) and so draw level. The match was always in the balance as the equally close final game progressed, eventually falling 802 – 821 to Turu’s, which meant that Fina held the series by just eight pins to force the draw (2420 – 2412). Mark Muscat (Fina), 656. Tiziana Carannante (Turu’s Knights), 696, female bowler of the week.

Freshly promoted to the top flight from Div II, Pin Strikers find themselves lying in third place thanks to their 6 – 2 win over XS. It was the eventual losers who snatched the early points with a convincing 707 – 804 game one win, but it was all square after two as their youthful opponents drew level with a 753 – 691 game two win. XS still held a slight pin advantage going into game three, but it was Pin Strikers again, winning it 746 – 701 to clinch the series by ten pins (2206 – 2196). Shaun Montanaro (Pin Strikers), 591. Matthew Magro (XS), 588.

Blitzkrieg were also majority winners in their 2 – 6 clash with Supreme in the opening week. Supreme drew first blood on the night with a 713 – 598 opening victory, but then Blitzkrieg came back with all guns blazing in the second, winning it 678 – 792 to make it two all. The best was yet to come however, and Blitzkrieg claimed the match with a 710 – 801 game three win. Matthew Gingell Littlejohn (Blitzkrieg), 578. Ernest Agius (Supreme), 531.
