TEN PIN BOWLING: MSV Life National League, Week 5

Gavin Muscat

  • Okmalta.com pick up first full point win of season

Week five of the MSV Life National League saw champions Fina open up a four point lead in Division I, thanks to a massive 0 – 8 victory over XS Vitel, as previous leaders Ramis could only manage a 4 – 4 draw against Royal Shock. Okmalta.com bagged their first 100% victory of the season against a weak Supreme outfit, and there was also a pull point win for Blitzkrieg over The Clan. The clash between Strike Me and Turu’s Knights produced the second tied result of the week.

Fina were in a class of their own as they pulled off the highest team series of the campaign to date (2502) in their 0 – 8 drubbing of XS Vitel. The difference between the two teams was clear from the opening frames as Fina easily took the first game 650 – 746, before shooting the best game of the week to also take the second game, 740 – 903. XS Vitel could do nothing to stop the rot, as their formidable opponents took the final game 733 – 853 to complete the rout. Kenneth Arpa (Fina), 665, male bowler of the week. Matthew Magro (XS Vitel), 559.

Okmalta.com managed their first full 100% of the season to date, although it was as much to do with a poor showing from their opponents, Supreme as it was on their own merit as the all-star team still appears to be lacking in consistency. The won the opener 691 – 648, and then went four up with a 648 – 726 game two win. Game three produced their best effort for a big 683 – 845 finale. Dennis Mercieca (okmalta.com), 598. Ernest Agius (Supreme), 503.

Blitzkrieg got off to a flying start in their 0 – 8 thrashing of The Clan, bagging the first of the series with a solid 632 – 827 score line. The teams could easily have been level after two, but Blitzkrieg just managed to hang on to with the close encounter 698 – 706, before easily taking the final game 633 – 746 to make sure of all eight, and a leap up to 5th place in the classification. Matthew Gingell Littlejohn, 653. James Vassallo (The Clan), 566.

Previous leaders Ramis are now in second place, after only managing a week five tie against Royal Shock who are in fourth place. It was the latter who took the early advantage thanks to their 738 – 780 game one victory, and that 42 pin cushion would prove to be vital in order to force the draw, as Ramis bounced back to win the second and third games, 774 – 757 and 749 – 748 respectively. This meant that Royal Shock held on to the series points with their slim 24 pin edge (2261 – 2285). Philip Gruppetta (Ramis), 594. Joe Cassar (Royal Shock), 630.

Strike Me and Turu’s Knights shared the points in another 4 – 4 draw, the former just easing themselves up off the bottom of the standings, to be replaced by XS Vitel for now at least. Game one was a close one and went to the Knights 723 – 730, but again it was all square after two, thanks to a better 789 – 745 win for Strike Me. It was Turu’s again in game three which they won 682 – 708, but that wasn’t enough to win the match, as Strike Me’s good game two win kept them just ahead on the series, for the draw (2194 – 2183). Tiziana Carannante (Turu’s Knights), 585, female bowler of the week. Liliana Spiteri (Strike Me), 548.
