TEN PIN BOWLING: MSV Life National League, Week 5

Big wins for Okmalta.com, Fina in battle for top spot

Third placed Turu’s Knights kept up the pressure on the front runners, with a 100% victory over Malta International Airport in week five of the current MSV Life National League at the SuperBowl. There were also full-point wins for leaders Fina against Royal Shock, as well as defending champions okmalta.com over The Clan. J Grima & Co took a majority victory against Supreme, while the match between Bello Aluminium and Ramis ended in a 4 – 4 tie.

At this relatively early stage in the eighteen week long season, Turu’s Knights are now in third place, six behind second place and eight behind the leaders, after a useful 0 – 8 win against Malta International Airport in week five. The Knights started strongly with a 696 – 802 opener, and then wend four ahead by winning the second 638 – 735. Game three saw something of a fight back from MIA, and it could not have been closer with just one pin separating the two sides, Turu’s winning it 754 – 755 to narrowly take all eight. Peter Mallia (Turu’s Knights), 585. Steve Cassar (Malta International Airport), 513.

Okmalta.com returned to winning ways in style this week, shooting the biggest series of the night (2446) in their 0 – 8 thrashing of bottom side The Clan. The champions took control from the opening frames to easily win game one 663 – 842. They were also offered little resistance in game two which they won 694 – 816,. And they rounded off the whitewash with a 705 – 788 game three win. Rankin Camilleri (okmalta.com), 656 – male bowler of the week. James Vassallo (The Clan), 531.

Leaders Fina matched okmalta.com’s victory with an 8 – 0 win of their own, to the detriment of Royal Shock who fall one spot too fourth with the heavy loss. Game one presented no hardship for Fina, as they won it 769 – 690, but game two was extremely close, with Fina just edging it 834 – 831. Game three ended 827 – 746 to the league leaders, to complete the 100%. Justin Caruana Scicluna (Fina), 622. Joe Cassar (Royal Shock), 575.

J Grima & Co managed a 6 – 2 win against Supreme, although after a shaky start as they lost the first game of the series 715 – 748. However, Supreme couldn’t hold their pace beyond the opening game as they went down 748 – 693 in game two, and then lost the scrappy last game 712 – 653 to hand victory to J Grima & Co. Benny Hili (J Grima & Co), 540. Helenio Grech (Supreme), 528.

Ramis were authors of their own misfortune in their week five clash with Bello Aluminium, having to settle for a four all draw in spite of winning two of the three set games. They won game one 729 – 751, but then faltered to a low 687, against a 747 leveller from Bello Aluminium. That score line would make all the difference, allowing Bello to force the draw in spite of losing the third game 763 – 771, as they won the series points by 30 pins (2239 – 2209). Mark Spiteri (Ramis), 578. Cole Cooper (Bello Aluminium), 609.
