Fina retain league title with room to spare

Gavin Muscat

Fina have successfully retained their MSV Life National League crown in style, having been reconfirmed as champions with one week to spare, in the 18 week Division I season. They claimed victory with a total of 118 points from a maximum of 144, which translates to a very impressive 81.9% win rate. They were in no mood for charity in week 18 in spite of their having the league title safely in the bag, rounding off their victorious season with a 0 – 8 win over Turu’s Knights (4th).

Okmalta.com seemed to struggle with their form and consistency for a good portion of the season, but rallied to stage a late challenge, having to make do with second place, 14 points behind on 104, just five ahead of third place which was claimed by Ramis, 99 pts. It was the latter who enjoyed the better form in the earlier section of the league campaign, as they tussled with Fina for the Div I top spot for several weeks. Okmalta.com picked up all eight from their final encounter with bottom side, Strike Me, and there was a similar success for Ramis, with Blitzkrieg (6th) on the receiving end of the thrashing.

At the other end of the table, the battle for survival went down to the wire with both relegations places being decided in the final week’s fixtures. Supreme pulled of a Houdini act to escape the drop and finish 8th by beating Strike Me (relegated) 2 – 6, which also meant that YoBetit (ex-The Clan) dropped into the second relegation spot with their heavy loss at the hands of okmalta.com.

Royal Shock finished in fifth place, ending their season with a majority victory (2 – 6) over XS Vitel (7th) in a no-pressure match, with neither team harbouring any hope of a top three finish, or fears of relegation for that matter.

-Team Fina: Statistics of Champions

Fina’s two-time title form has been impressive to say the least, as is borne out by their season’s statistics which show that they have enjoyed no less than eleven full point (8 – 0) victories over 18 matches, having lost only two of their encounters, both with 6 – 2 score lines against Turu’s Knights and okmalta.com in weeks 9 and 15 respectively. Fina shared the points in a 4-all draw with Ramis in week 7, and again in week 10 against Blitzkrieg. The remaining three results were 6 – 2 victories to make up that impressive 81.9% win rate.

The double champions also swept the board when it comes to team achievements as they topped all four categories: Scratch hi-game – 954 (also hi-game with handicap), scratch hi-series – 2740, (also hi-game with handicap.

The most coveted individual awards, those of male and female hi-average also went to the Fina aces, with Sue Abela the top scoring lady with her 199.9 average from 48 games, while Justin Caruana Scicluna took the men’s honour with a mean 214 from his 54 games.

-Division II: Swift return to top flight for Malta Int. Airport

Malta International Airport have bounced straight back up into the top flight as Div II champions after just one season, having been relegated at the end of the 2015 Winter season last May. Similarly to their Div I counterparts, MIA secured the Div II title with a week to spare, finishing on 117 points, ten ahead of Pin Strikers who are also promoted from second place on 107.

The brand new season of the MSV Life National Tenpin Bowling League will get underway in January, after a short break for the Christmas period. Registrations are now open, and any new teams wishing to take part should inquire via email to mtbamalta@gmail.com.
