2012 came to a close on a positive note for the Malta Taekwondo Federation when four athletes from the national team successfully participated in the Cyprus International Taekwondo Tournament. Other participating teams came fromIsrael,Greece,Ukraine, andCyprus.

The Maltese athletes were Kimberly Meli, Mauro Busuttil, Gianluca Barbara & Kyle Vassallo, who competed in the -67Kg female and +80Kg, -80kg, and -68kg male categories respectively. Kimberly Meli won her opening bout but then failed to qualify for the final though still attaining a bronze medal. Likewise Mauro Busuttil also lost his opening bout, but then won the next bout and was awarded a bronze medal. The two other athletes, Gianluca Barbara and Kyle Vassallo, both lost their opening bouts, albeit with minimal points, and hence failed to qualify further in their respective categories. With two bronze medals TeamMaltaplaced third overall, withGreeceattaining second place andCyprusclaiming first.

In December the Federation also held its Black Belt (Dan) grading. Joe Azzopardi attained his Fourth Dan while Eric Attard and Gabriel Borg both qualified for their First Dan. The examining board was made up of Master Chris Vella (6th Dan), Stephen Formosa (5th Dan) and Neville Desira (3rd Dan). The Malta Taekwondo Federation thanks these three taekwondokas on their achievement and wishes them more success in the future. The next Dan grading is scheduled to take place during the month of May 2013.
