The Malta National Waterpolo team arrived in Poland late on Wednesday night. All players seem to be in high spirits after a job well done against Turkey on Tuesday were Malta beat the Turks (8-7) to register a mathematical and merited qualification for the second round of the European Championships qualifiers.

The contingent that is being led by the ASA General Secretary Martin Borg met at the MIA late on Wednesday afternoon and after nearly a seven hour journey via Berlin checked in comfortably at the Focus Hotel in Szczecin. After dinner coach Sergio Afric communicated  Thursday’s programme to his lads which will consist of two training sessions scheduled at 10.30am and at 6.30pm respectively.

Malta plays against Poland on Friday at 8pm at the Floating Arena complex the same venue in which the training sessions will be held. Our National Waterpolo team starts as clear favourites to win against Poland but the opponents will make that extra effort in front of their home crowd to try and finish the commitments in this competition with a win after they have lost all their previous three games (two against Turkey home and away and the other against Malta at Tal-Qroqq).

If Malta wins against Poland Afric’s side will still finish second in the group behind Turkey because the Turks have a better goal difference. Malta will then play against either France, Greece, Germany, Spain, Romania on October 19th and 29th in the second qualifying round on a home and away basis and the winner on aggregate will confirm the travel ticket for the European Championships in Eindhoven in 2012.

In the meantime it was confirmed that no injuries were reported after the game of Tuesday and therefore all the thirteen men in the squad are at the full disposal of Afric and Izzo.

The other members of the contingent that traveled to Poland, apart from the ASA Secretary and the two coaches, are Doctor Stefan Camilleri and Charles Spearing who is the Kit Manager of the team.

A Press conference to be addressed by the two coaches and captains of the two National teams in scheduled for Thursday at noon.

ASA President Joe Caruana Curren is expected to join the team in Szczecin on Friday before the game.
