Swimmers maintain progress in Berlin Meet

Sarah Demicoli, Amy Micallef, Matthew Zammit, Michael Umnov and Matthias Azzopardi, who won medals and broke age-group records during the Berlin Swim Meet.

A group of 34 Neptunes and 3 IASIS Marsascala swimmers between the ages of 10 and 21 years took part in the recent international swimming meet held at the SSE swimming complex in Berlin, Germany where 64 clubs from Germany, Poland, Denmark and Great Britain also took part. The group of swimmers were under the guidance of Neptunes Swimming Headcoach Gail Rizzo who was assisted by coaches Mark Buttigieg and Monique Mangion.

The Maltese swimmers were rewarded for the hard training that they have undergone since the start of this season last August as evidenced from the excellent results obtained. All swimmers achieved personal best times and medals were won by Sarah Demicoli, Matthias Azzopardi, Amy Micallef, Matthew Zammit and Michael Umnov.

Moreover, the following ASA Malta Age-group records were broken by the Neptunes swimmers:

100m Breaststroke 1:20.07 previously 1:21.39 set by Amy Micallef in Oct’10;
200m Breaststroke 2:52.76 previously 3:02.62 set by Amy Micallef in Jul’10;
50m Butterfly 0:33.62 previously 0:33.89 set by Amy Micallef in May’10.

Matthew Zammit – Group C Boys
50m Breaststroke 0:32.66 previously 0:32.79 set by Daniel Galea in Dec’08;
100m Butterfly 1:02.78 previously 1:03.59 set by Matthew Zammit in Jul’10.

After this Berlin success, swimmers will resume their training programme after the New Year in preparation for the annual ASA Easter International Swimming Meet which will be held as usual at the National Pool Complex in April’11.
