The following six local water polo clubs will be participating in the Bank of Valletta Winter League 2011 being organised by the ASA at the National Pool, Tal-Qroqq as from the beginning of March 2011 up to May 2011:

Exiles Jet Services, Marsascala Solidbase, Neptunes Emirates, San Giljan Firetech, Sirens Ritter Sport and Sliema McDonalds.

As in previous years, the ASA Under-17 National team will be also taking part in this league but will “be out of the competition” as regards results obtained.  The Winter League will be a valuable experience for the  Under-17 team due to participation in the LEN Junior Qualifying Tournament that will be held in Ukraine between the 7th and 10th April 2011.  Malta’s opponents in this tournament will be Ukraine, Russia, Israel and the Czech Republic.

A single round-robin league will be played during the winter league and the first phase will be played between the 5 March and 16 April.

The 1st and 4th placed teams and the 2nd and 3rd placed teams will play a best-of-1 play-off against each other on the 7 May 2011. The 5th and 6th placed teams will also play a best-of-1 play-off to determine the 5th and 6th places on the 13 May 2011.

The losers of the semi-finals will meet on the 14 May in a best-of-1 play-off to determine the 3rd and 4th place.  The winners of the semi-finals will meet between the 11th and 15th May in a best-of-3 play-offs to determine the winner of the Winter League.

The attached fixture list also includes the matches of the Under-15 Winter League as well as the Winter Youth Festivals that are already in progress.

The ASA also announced that the following Age-Group Water Polo competitions will be held in summer as follows:

·       U/14 – Born 1997 or after

·       U/16 – Born 1995 or after

·       U/19 – Born 1992 or after

.       Festivals for Under 12 (born 1999 or after)

The rules governing foreign players have remained unchanged for 2011 and clubs may make use of foreign players as per ASA rules in all age-group and senior competitions.  However, as from 2012, clubs will be able to make use of foreign players only in the U/20 and senior water polo competitions.  No foreign players will be eligible to participate in the U/15 and U/17 competitions in 2012.
