Successful participation by Stella Maris College in Vienna

A strong 63-person contingent from Stella Maris College, Gzira returned to Malta late on Sunday evening following the school’s first ever participation at the World Sports Festival in Vienna. This year’s sixth edition attracted the participation of 2500 athletes from 27 countries.

The Maltese students participated in eight different sporting disciplines with the best results achieved in table tennis where Miguel Pullicino claimed the bronze medal in the u/13 category while Nicholas Montebello also finished third in the u/16 category. However, the top result was achieved in the u/16 doubles competition when Miguel Pullicino and Miguel Montebello won the silver medal while Nicholas Montebello and Jason Borg Millo claimed the bronze medal.

In badminton Luigi Grech won the bronze medal in the u/16 category and then teamed up with Garrett Bonello to claim third place in the u/16 doubles competition.

Wrestler Neil Farrugia also won a bronze medal in the u/15, 69kg category while bowler Kurt Attard also won the bronze medal in the Team Event.

The u/13 football team finished sixth out of thirteen teams following three consecutive victories against Albanian side ADA Football Team A (6-0), ASK Kottingbrunn of Austria(5-2) and Vllaznia Albanian Soccer Team A (2-0). The team also suffered three defeats against Hungarian side SZTK Erima (0-3), Wacker Innsbruck of Austria (0-3) and German side SpVgg Unterhaching (1-2).

In swimming none of the Maltese swimmers managed a place on the podium but all managed to improve a good number of their personal bests.

The school was also represented in tennis and squash.

The Maltese contingent also participated in the spectacular Opening Ceremony that was held at the Trenkwalder Stadium.
