A recent five-a-side girls’ football festival held on three separate days underlined the popularity the game is gaining in our country among the females.

The event was held over three rounds at San Anton, San Andrea and St Martin’s Schools, with eight teams taking part, comprising a total of over 100 girls. The matches were all played on the school’s outdoor synthetic pitches. It was undoubtedly a festival which called for smooth organisation.

Each team was under the guidance of a coach who could boast of some promising young girls. In fact, the standard of football was encouraging and the keen matches were evidence that schoolgirls have five-a-side football at heart.

National women’s team coach Pierre Brincat, one of the organisers of the festival together with Alfred Zammit and Dorita Agius, were present alongside MFA technical director Robert Gatt. Indeed, they must been heartened by the girls’ commitment and skills.

At the end of the festival each girl was presented with a medal, with the eight schools receiving a commemorative shield.

The next event will be the Fun Festival for schools which will be held at the Ta’ Qali training grounds on Tuesday 10th May.
