The GasanMamo Youth Rugby 7’s Tournament was played out recently at Marsa with the participation of all the rugby clubs and a significant turnout – an exciting day of rugby and fun.  Around 100 players took part and one could tell from the faces of all the players involved it was a good day had by all.  It was played with a great sense of fair play and sportsmanship with youth rugby being the overall winner.  All the young players were presented with a GasanMamo certificates by Brian Daltan Vice President of the Malta Rugby Football Union.  Trophies were given to the winning clubs.

In the under 12 category Kavallieri, Birkirkara and Valletta each put out teams to play in what was to be a fun morning of rugby for the little ones. Each team played each other twice with a dominant display from Valletta Lions who won the age category overall. There are some star players coming up from this age group and it looks like there is a great future for Malta rugby with such enthusiasm and dedication being shown by all.

The under 14’s came down to Kavallieri vs Birkirkara an old rivalry from last year renewed in the form of the 7’s tournament, again Kavallieri proved too good to beat and came top of the table to win the 7’s. This age group has come on leaps and bounds with some good raw talent coming through which will surely lead to a solid future for these two clubs.

The 7’s tournament proved to be a tough challenge for all with some great performances from Kavallieri, Gladiators and Birkirkara. Each game lasted longer than the usual 7 minutes allotted to give the boys some much needed competition since the bad weather and exam period had led to a lot of cancellations. There were some exciting performances from all but the day belonged to a purely stunning Birkirkara side with a lot of youngsters having played for a long time, leading them to win the tournament overall. Each club has shown that through the guidance of their coachesMaltayouth rugby is an exciting place to be.

“We are very satisfied with the direction youth rugby in Malta is taking,” said Julian J. Mamo, Director at GasanMamo Insurance.  “The future of rugby in Malta looks bright, confirmed by the increasing numbers of young players and the demand for rugby-based games in schools.  The GasanMamo Tournament saw some excellent team performances.  The growth in popularity of this sport is very encouraging and we will maintain our support to ensure this.”
