In the last few years, Maltese handball has experienced constant growth in terms of number of teams and players, national teams’ positive performances and organisation of top events including tournaments and conferences. All this came about thanks to the hard work of many individuals who have handball at heart and dedicate their free time to it.  Though Malta is still considered as a developing country, it has gained a lot of respect and good reputation among the different countries members of the European Handball Federation and by the continental federation itself, thanks to its contribution in the international field.

Malta Handball Association technical director Alan Grima has been acting as delegate of the EHF for four years now.  This last year proved to be a very successful one for him where he received a total number of sixteen nominations in different European competitions.  He received the first nomination at the end of February for a Men’s Challenge Cup last sixteen match between AEK of Greece and Sporting CP of Portugal which was played in Greece.

Alan Grima was then nominated for the Women’s Under 19 European Championship which was held in the Netherlands. During this European Championship, Alan Grima was appointed as match supervisor in ten matches, namely Germany – Serbia (21-16); Serbia – France (33-31); France – Germany (26-13); Sweden – Serbia (26-27); Croatia – Sweden (20-30); Serbia – Croatia (29-23); Slovenia – Poland (25-26); France – Norway (20-19); Slovenia – Ukraine (25-20) and Germany – Norway (32-20). The tournament was played between Thursday 4th August and Sunday 14th August and was hosted in five different cities: Leek, Arnhem, Almelo, Maastricht and Rotterdam.

Alan was back in Greece in October for the Men’s EHF Cup 2 round match between AEK Athens of Greece and OCI-Lions of the Netherlands.  In the first weekend of November, he received three nominations during the Men’s Under 23 Challenge Trophy which was held in Malta.  He was match supervisor in two matches, namely Moldova against Scotland and Moldova against Azerbaijan – which was the match deciding the winner of the tournament, and also match observer in the match between Scotland and Azerbaijan. His sixteenth and last nomination of the year was in France for the Men’s EHF Cup match between Nantes of France and Dinamo Minsk of Belorussia.

His 2012 first assignment will be in Italy where he was appointed delegate for the Men’s World Cup qualifying match between Italy and Lithuania which is being played in Cologne on Saturday 7th January.  The match will be transmitted live on Raisport at 2100hours.
