Success for Stella Maris athletes in Brno

Nine athletes from Stella Maris College, Gzira recently participated in the annual European Kids Athletics Games that were held in Brno, Czech Republic.

Edward Bezzina and Michele Lucia were the main protagonists after claiming silver and bronze medals respectively. Bezzina finished second in the U/14 shot put event after covering a distance of 12.51m. while Lucia clocked 8.39sec. in the U/12 60m. sprint to finish third. He also participated in the long jump event with his best jump marking 4.20m.

Gary Ghirxi also finished a creditable first in the U/13 60m. B Final with a time of 8.14sec. He also participated in the 150m. registering a time of 20.25sec.

In the U/15 60m. B Final Andrea Cristiano sprinted home in 7.77sec. He also participated in the 100m. Hurdles clocking 15.57sec. Julian Vella took part in the U/12 60m. but although finishing third in his heat in 9.12sec. he was eliminated.

In the U/15 1500m. twin brothers, Luke and Joseph Camilleri gave a good performance with the former finishing fourth in 4min 28sec.

Perth Grech and Luke Anthony Borg completed the Stelmarians’ participation in the U/14 High Jump event. All athletes except Bezzina also represented the school in the 4x60m. relay event.

The SMC contingent was led by team officials Kevin Azzopardi, Jonathan Camenzuli and Emanuel Cilia.
