Last week the U13 team of Sliema ASC Maypole travelled to Civitavecchia, Rome to compete in the 4th Calcaterra Challenge, a prestigious international tournament held annually. Thirty-two teams, mostly Italian, competed in this year’s edition, which was held between 29th March and 1st April 2018.

This was the second time that Sliema Maypole competed in this tournament, having placed a respectable 22nd in last year’s edition. Sliema Maypole were drawn in Group C and progressed to the knock out phase after placing in the top four. The Sliema boys narrowly lost their quarter final game against eventual finalists SC Quinto. Following this defeat Sliema Maypole played a series of placing matches and ended the tournament in 12th place.

Sliema Maypole played a total of fifteen games, scoring 82 goals and registered some noticeable wins against top notch opponents such as Pro Recco (4-3), WP Bari (6-1) and RN Libertas Perugia (5-0). It is also worth noting that six of the players in the squad attend the National Sports School. The team was coached by Dejan Simeonov and Alex Attard, whilst Patrick Cachia and Kurt Engerer were Team Managers.

This was another milestone for the club’s Academy, which today boasts close to 250 kids. In order to achieve its objectives, the academy continues to invest heavily in its coaching methods. In fact, the academy today employs a number of fully qualified coaches including four full time foreign coaches. Furthermore, the academy organises numerous overseas trips for its squads as well as financing overseas training for its athletes.
