With seven minutes to go, and Hotsticks down by two goals, Lukas Plaehn stepped in to take the penalty stroke. Converting it meant it would have been a breathtaking finale. However, this was not to be denied by the Qormi goalkeeper who saved well to his right.

From start to finish this was a hard fought game and even though the Sliema side was two goals down half way into the first thirty-five minutes, the team reacted and reduced the gap from a Portelli short corner. Earlier on Qormi had opened the score from their first penalty corner and doubled from a dubious penalty stroke.

In the second half play was shared but it was Qormi who re-established a two-goal gap. Hotsticks’ adopted a never-say-die attitude and scored again when Ryan Dalli put Lukas Plaehn through and with only the goalkeeper to beat he played the ball to 16-year-old Schembri who tapped in from close range. This was the first goal with the senior team for the promising striker.

In the 60th minute Qormi made it 4-2 but it was not over yet as seven minutes from time Hotsticks were awarded a penalty stroke. It was not to be as Plaehn saw his shot at goal saved. In the final minute Qormi scored goal number five and sealed the result.

On Sunday Hotsticks will face Young Stars in what promises to be an interesting encounter as both teams are in need of points.
