STOMPERS RYANS BAR 27 vs KAVALLIERI MEGAMAN CISK EXCEL 15

A determined Stompers side reversed the Cisk Lager League result of a couple of weeks ago to win the MRFU Cup at Marsa against Kavallieri.

From the kick off Kavallieri exerted their man for man strength to impose power rugby on Stompers and looked dangerous. After a long period of recycling possession they gradually worked up to the Stompers line and Doublesin scored an inevitable try, but Micallef missed the conversion. Stompers replied with a smart interception by Cerketa who ran in from 30 metres as he pounced on a floated pass; this was converted by Attard to take the lead 7-5. The pattern continued as Kavallieri bullied their way upfield but Stompers clearing kicks were long and accurate to regain lost ground.

Veteran international Robert Bonavia let his side down by being yellow carded to the sin bin for ten minutes. However the Kavallieri pack raised their game to win ruck after ruck, and after Micallef put in a superb kick from full back to gain some 60 metres, they scored a brilliant lineout maul try, driving over 30 metres for Borda to touch down and regain the lead 10 -7. Stompers made three substitutes bringing on Pace-Moore, Tonna and Gatt which raised their competitiveness up front, drew level with a penalty from Attard.

As Kavallieri drove forward yet again, Attard made a superb swerving , pace changing run which carved the Kavallieri wide open. When stopped he passed to the supporting Morton who flipped inside to Mirabelli to score under the posts just before half time. After Attard converted Stompers went in with a 17-10 lead.

The second half showed growing errors from both sides and Attard missed a penalty to extend their lead. Vassallo for Kavallieri was making some crushing tackles and knocking the slick Stompers backs off their game. One decidedly hard and doubtfully legal one meant the Stompers key fly half Morton had to leave the field injured . Kavallieri were attacking again and again but Stompers defended desperately and held them off. Several times poor passing at crucial moments spoiled promising movements, and dropped high kicks gave Stompers ground.

Finally Stompers broke out and attacked and two good breaks by Attard, two quick recycles, and Mathew Camilleri was given room to score out wide, 22 – 10 to Stompers as Attard missed the conversion.

Kavallieri moved up a gear and began a long period of laying siege to the Stompers line, but simply could not break the defence. Stompers began to work clear but then Mirabelli made a rare bad pass which was dropped by Attard and they were under pressure again, but Kavallieri knocked on when almost over the try line and the chance was lost.

Several close range ball recycles gave Kavallieri hope when Vassallo powered his way to score an unconverted try..

A long clearance kick from Attard brought the game into the Kavallieri half, a dropped catch gave the Stompers a scrum advantage and from this Attard worked a scissors movement from which M. Camilleri destroyed the defence with a beautifully angled run to score under the posts and the MRFU Cup was Stompers, 27 points to 15.

The tackle that the Kavelleri Number 30 made on Chris Morton was just bad sportsmanship! It was intentionally high and this wasn’t the only time Vassallo was playing dirty! There were many other times in the game that he was the cause of a dirty play, yet for some reason, the referee didn’t do a single thing about it…

Good win for the Stompers who deserved the win!
