Sports organisations can achieve financial sustainability by being innovative and by looking at new ways of leadership and financial administration. This was stated by Parliamentary Secretary for Research, Innovation, Youth and Sport, Stefan Buontempo, while addressing participants of the Youth F.A. annual seminar.

The government, through the Malta Sports Council, will be working together with the Edward de Bono Institute, to cultivate an innovative culture among sport organisations, which will consequently result in stronger organisations.

Parliamentary Secretary Buontempo said that a new way of thinking in sports can be introduced together, having the Government as a partner, of sports organisations. However, this could only be achieved if all stakeholders work together and start thinking outside the box. Contrary to popular thinking, research and Innovation, are not limited to science and technology, but can be applied to everything that can be done differently, continued Dr Buontempo.

The Government will be a partner in this endeavour so that we instil a bottom-up approach, contrary to what has been expected, as anyone can be innovative.

Dr Buontempo thanked all those involved in clubs’ management for their dedication and hard work and augured a fruitful working relationship between the Government and Youth F.A.

The seminar was also addressed by Parliamentary Secretary for the EU Presidency 2017 and EU Funds, Ian Borg. Parliamentary Secretary Borg said that as sport is not considered a priority area for the EU, access to funding by sports organisations is limited.

However, Dr Borg, encouraged sports organisations to combine their project with a priority area such health and energy. He suggested that a strong project can be presented if the Youth F.A. takes the initiative and present a project that would be implemented across its youth nurseries.

Dr Borg thanked those present for their work in our communities in Malta and Gozo while encouraging them to inspire a sports culture among our young people.
