Sport stacking, a hand-eye co-ordination and fitness activity involving the use of 12 specially designed Speed Stacks ® plastic cups that need to be assembled in specific patterns on a mat in the fastest possible time using special timing equipment – has arrived in Malta too. This game played by Stackers, race against the clock stacking and down-stacking these plastic cups in the fastest time possible whilst having fun and enjoyment..

Sport stacking began 20 years ago in the USA. It is now practised in 54 countries and is part of the Physical Education curriculum and in sports clubs at a national and international level.  Main benefits of sport stacking are that it develops gross and fine motor skills, fitness, ambidexterity, hand-eye coordination, focus, problem solving skills, team building skills, and improved self-esteem.

Sport stacking in Malta took off at St. Aloysius College Primary School in January 2014 as a break activity on rainy days. Stacking fever captured the interest and imagination of so many children that in April 2015 the very first school Stack Fest tournament took place. The St Aloysius College School community also took part in ‘Stack Up! Day’ in November 2014 and 2015. This annual event organised by the World Sport Stacking Association (WSSA) aims to set a new Guinness World Record for “Most People Sport Stacking at Multiple Locations in One Day.” Thanks to the 618,394 stackers from the 31 countries who took part, on November 12th, 2015 – for the tenth year in a row – the WSSA STACK UP! set a new record. Currently, a group of Maltese children are preparing to take part in the World Sport Stacking Championships to be held in Germany between the 1st and 3rd April, 2016.

Stacking can take place anywhere as long as you have a flat surface. And the costs are minimal: you only need a set of cups to start off. Interested persons in taking up this sport, are invited to join the Facebook group Sport Stacking Malta. Start stacking today and make a difference!
