Hamrun S        2

Paola H             1

After Sliema lost to Valletta in the previous game, Hamrun are now sharing top spot with Pieta H on 16 points from 7 games while Paola are in fourth position on 13 points also from 7 games. The game was a keen and balanced affair as both sides had their very good moments.

Hamrun were the first to threaten as Luca Bugeja square-passed the ball to Joseph Vella and he drove slightly over the bar from inside the area.

In a reaction by Paola they created two actions. Keiran Xuereb dribbled past an opponent  and as he tried his luck from outside the area Hamrun keeper Andrea Camilleri denied him with a diving save and a one-two between Daniel Buckle and Xuereb ended with the latter releasing Chris Mallia in the area and Camilleri saved his header.

Two more actions were then created by Hamrun. Seymour Micallef served Ryan Borg with a through ball in the area and Paola keeper Dorian Bugeja foiled him with a timely sortie in two attempts and Brady Galea served Borg on the edge of the area but he drove slightly out.

In the 28th minute Hamrun opened the score as they won a corner kick on the right flank which was well-taken by Bugeja and after the ball was partly cleared outside the area it came in the path of Micallef who was left unmarked and he gave Bugeja no chance with a hard rising shot in the top right hand corner of the net.

Paola then created the last two actions before the break. Carlos Grech was fouled on the left flank and the ball was headed away from the free kick by Xuereb and Xuereb then dribbled past an opponent on the left flank and Camilleri neutrlised the ball from his cross-shot in two attempts.

Hamrun created the first action after the restart when Waddle Formosa released Vella on the right flank who after advancing executed a perfect cross in the area but found no takers to apply the killer touch, and at the other end, Nick Ghio dribbled past an opponent outside the area and camilleri saved his half volley.

In the 51st minute Paola levelled matters when Xuereb released Mbong on the right flank who after out-speeding a defender entered the area and scored with a hard and low diagonal shot.

Minute later Hamrun came very close a second goal. Vella released Borg in the area and after Bugeja partly saved his shot the same player drove slightly over the bar from the rebound.

In an effort to score the winner the Paolites threw everything in attack and created three actions in a row. After a well-taken flag kick by Xuereb, Ghio headed slightly out from inside the area. A flag kick by substitute Conor Zammit createds havoc in Hamrun’s area but somehow the ball was cleared away and Matthew Camilleri released Buckle on the right flank outside the area and from his hard drive the ball skimmed the bar  with Camilleri beaten.

In the second minute of added time Hamrun scored the winner after a choral move between four players. Micallef square-passed the ball to substitute Stefmar Hatherly who in turn served substitute Joyfred Farrugia with a through ball and as the latter returned the compliment to Galea in the area he scored with a low drive .
