Spartans continued with their positive run by beating Rabat and also they won against leaders Pieta last week. They were by far the better side and dominated the procedings throughout the whole 80 minutes as Rabat were rarely in the game. In Rabat’s only action in the first period, Jamie Muscat pounced on a faulty clearance and after advancing his lobbed ball missed the upright with Spartans keeper Jean C De Battista well out of position.

From then on Hamrun commenced their onslaught. Diego Zammit served Dylan Busuttil with a cross from the left and Rabat keeper Andrew Zammit saved his shot from outside the area. Jim Cilia was then fouled outside the area and the ball missed the upright from the free kick by Ryan Spiteri. After a well-taken flag kick by Spiteri, Melvin Busuttil failed to apply the killer touch from 2 metres with a gaping goal at his mercy.

Spiteri then served Dylan Busuttil with a cross from the right and as he tried his luck from the edge of the area Zammit was forced to tip the ball over the bar and minutes later he saved a free kick shot by Melvin Busuttil after Dylan Busuttil was fouled outside the area.

In the 28th minute Hamrun deservedly took the lead when Gary Cauchi served Spiteri with a through ball who after out-speeding a defender entered the area and scored with a low shot.

Hamrun kept pressing, Cilia served Spiteri on the right flank and Zammit neutralised the ball from his cross-shot and Diego Zammit was fouled outside the area and from Melvin Busuttil’s free kick the ball was somehow cleared away to safety.

The second period was a carbon copy of the first with Hamrun dominating and Rabat creating only one action.

Dylan Busuttil served Spiteri with a cross from the right but the ball was blocked by a defender from his shot.

In Rabat’s only action Nathan Borg was fouled outside the area and Aidan Azzopardi drove well over the bar from the free kick.

Hamrun doulbled the score on the hour when Diego Zammit served Spiteri with a through ball, entered the area and dribbled past the onrushing keeper and rolled the ball into an empty net.

After Cauchi was fouled outside the area, Spiteri served Melvin Busuttil with a short pass from the free kick but he drove the ball over the bar, and just before the end Hamrun were denied by the woodwork when Spiteri dribbled past an opponent outside the area and the ball thumped the upright from his hard drive with Zammit completely beaten.
