Hamrun S   2        Floriana   1

Hamrun maintained their unbeaten run from 9 games having won 6 and drew 3 and now share top spot with Pieta H on 21 points. Floriana are still in troubled waters having only 5 points also from 9 games. The Spartans were the better outfit in the first period and the Greens improved after the resumption.

The game was only five minutes old and Hamrun opened the score with a choral move between three players. Dylan Busuttil served Gary Cauchi in the area and after the ball was partly cleared from his shot Ryan Cassar was on hand to score from the rebound.

Floriana then created two actions. Glenn Tabone was fouled outside the area and after Hamrun keeper Jean C De Battista partly saved the free kick shot by Isaac Galea a defender cleared the ball to safety and Galea then served Tabone in the area and De Battista foiled him with a timely sortie.

The score became 2-0 in the 20th minute when after a run down the left flank by Ryan Spiteri  he crossed the ball in the area which was partly cleared and Jim Cilia scored from the rebound with a hard rising shot from the edge of the area past a helpless Greens keeper Luke Falzon.

In another action by Hamrun, Spiteri crossed the ball in the area after a run down the left flank and Gary Cauchi drove over the bar when well-placed in the area,.

Floriana created the last two actions before the interval. Leo Muscat dribbled past two oponents and then released Tabone in the area but he drove out from a very ideal position and Claude Farrugia was then fouled on the right flank and De Battista saved the free kick shot by Jeremy Fenech.

A well-taken flag kick by Isaac Galea created havoc in Hamrun’s area but somehow the ball was cleared away to safety, while at the other end, Melvin Busuttil floated a perfect high ball in the area from a free kick and Falzon fisted the ball away to safety.

In the 48th minute Floriana reduced the gap. Matthew Degiorgio served Isaac Galea with a short free kick pass in mid-field and he unleashed a powerful rising shot and as De Battista was betrayed by the bounce the ball finished in the roof of the net.

Galea then served Muscat with a through ball but he missed the upright from outside the area , Galea floated a high ball in the area from a free kick and De Battista tipped the ball over the bar from Tabone’s header and from another well-taken corner kick by Galea the ball was cleared to another corner.

In the last action before the end, Cauchi served Spiteri in the area and Ellul foiled him from further progression as he dived at his feet and smothered the ball,
