Spartans lead the standings after beating St Andrew

The Spartans deserved the verdict as they were the much better outfit by creating much more actions than St Andrew who tried very hard to operate on the counter-attack but the Hamrun midfield sector closed all possible gaps. Following this game Hamrun lead the standings on 31 points from 14 games while St Andrew are fourth from bottom on 17 points from same number of games.

Hamrun went close as early as the 4th minute when Dylan Busuttil served Kim Cilia with a long throw-in in the area and the ball was cleared on the line from his shot and minutes later Busuttil released Ryan Spiteri on the right flank and St Andrew keeper Jake Galea neutralised the ball from his cross-shot.

St Andrew then mounted two actions. Daniel Saliba served Jacob Falzon in the area and he missed the upright from his shot and and in a similar action between the same two players Hamrun keeper Jean c De Battista foiled Falzon with a timely sortie.

In the 25 th minute Hamrun opened the score when Ryan Cassar served Gary Cauchi with a through ball in the area and he scored with a lobbed ball.

In a reaction by St Andrew Clyde Cumbo released Ryan Sammut on the right flank and De Battista neutralised the ball from his cross.

Hamrun doubled the score in the 25th minute as Ryan spiteri served Cauchi with a perfect through ball in the area who scored with a low shot

In the last action before the break St Andrew won a corner kick on the left flank which was taken by Cumbo and the ball was cleared to another corner.

A minute after the restart St Andrew went very close to reduce the gap. Adam Azzopardi served Neil Pace Cocks with a high through ball in the area who headed slightly out.

Hamrun then mounted two actions. Busuttil entered the area after dribbling past two opponents and Galea denied him with a diving save to a corner and minutes later the same player served Diego Zammit with a square pass outside the area and the ball missed the upright from his shot.

The score became 3-0 in the 55th minute. Gary Cauchi served Cilia in the area after beating a defender and the latter scored with a hard grounder from close-range.

Hamrun made it 4-0 on the hour. Ryan Cassar served Spiteri with a through ball who after entering the area was tripped by a defender and the same palyer made no mistake from the spot by sending Galea the wrong way of the ball.

The Spartans resumed with their pressing. Cauchi served substitute Andrea’ Ellul with a through ball outside the area and Galea effected a spectacular save as he tipped the ball over the bar.

A minute before the end Hamrun scored their fifth goal. Ellul dribbled past a defender who then served substitute Juan Schembri in the area who scored with a rising shot.
