Some players did not show up for training sessions – Hermans

Norway opened the score in the second minute with an absurd back heel finish coming from the tall Abdurahim Lajaab. Malta equalised in the fourth minute as Dean Gera stole a ball in the middle of the pitch and with a player in front of him shot to grab an equaliser. With five minutes to half time Lajaab again showed his skills to score another fantastic goal after rounding a player and burying the ball inside the net with his powerful shot.

A minute in the second half a team play by Norway with the last pass from Lajaab placed Stian Johnsen with the easiest of tasks to slot in the third goal for the Norwegians. The home team pressed and found an opening instantly when Carlos Scicluna slit the ball between the Norwegian keeper’s legs. Clint Cope could have equalised seconds after but the keeper deniedthe goal scoring opportunity. Cato Ravlo made it four with a well executed counter attack. In another counter attack Thomas Klausen scored the fifth for Norway when he anticipated the Maltese keeper with a well taken shot. In a three on one situation Lajaab made it six for Norway. Johnsen scored the last and seventh goal  for Norway in the dying seconds of the match.

Vic Hermans after the match commented “After the game against Switzerland I was hopeful of a very good showing but today we got a lesson for coming into this match with the wrong mentality. Some players did not show up for their training sessions and at this international level you cannot do it. I expected much better from the best players of our league. We will have a hard time if we do not change our mentality. At 3-2 I expected more and we could have easily eaqualised again but their fourth and fifth goal where too easy. Tomorrow will be another match and we will train tomorrow morning tactically to try and fix our deficiencies.”
