UEFA Futsal Cup 2011

Excess RP Bidnija 6 – Universitesi Istanbul 11

At one point half way during the second half of the match Excess RP Bidnija seemed that they were registering an impressive comeback.

A hat trick by player coach Florin Anton in the second part of the match boosted the morale of his players as Excess Bidnija were in two separate instances only one goal down to the Turks (5-4 and 6-5).

The lack of experienced Futsal players in the international scenario proved to be the weakest point of this team through the tournament which unfortunately was evident also today.

It was a final for the third place as like the Maltese team Istanbul Universitesi lost their previous two matches so it was a battle to avoid the wooden spoon.

Alexander Ribic was not in his best physical condition as he had suffered an ankle injury in the game against CF Eindhoven, but still decided to make that extra effort and play lengthy segments of the match.

Player coach Florin Anton who today surely was the man of the match opted to replace Ribic with Christian Micallef is his starting formation. The ex-U/21 Malta International and ex-Birkirkara FC player now 38 years, proved once again to be one of the backbones of this team. Istanbul Universitasi who had their playmaker Keskin ruled out for suspension, had a softer approach to the game in the initial stages but when they realized that Excess RP Bidnija meant serious business they changed and resumed to their normal game play.

The final result does not entirely reflect the outcome of the game as at least six goals were scored by the Turks in the last four minutes of play were the Maltese had no more energy in their legs and the regular players were seeking some rest on the bench. Florin Anton who had not yet put his name on the two previous match sheets, managed a fine performance which was topped with three fine goals. However Anton and Club President Mario Vella need to adjust and add some more names to their squad should they want to build a competitive team in UEFA competitions next time round.

With players like Ibrahim Tarik and Carlos Scicluna the latter Malta International in the squad, Excess RP Bidnija would have registered much more respectable results. Both players did not travel to Skopje for personal reasons.

Nonetheless this international exposure and experience will enhance the chances for this team to continue to improve and will definitely be one of the main contenders for the MFA 1st Division Futsal Championship for the 2011/12 season.
