Joseph Chetcuti bags the first Premier League season goal, Sliema and Floriana share the spoils

Qormi veteran Joseph Chetcuti scored the first goal of the Premier League to bag the first three important points for the Black and Yellows.

While we have been more excited about the prospect of the returning Stephen Wellman, who returned this morning from Nyon, Switzerland the 32 year old made a cameo appearance on the 69 minute.

Qormi’s front man scored the only goal in a lacklustre match which saw most of the play take place in the middle of the pitch as Rabat Ajax failed to find a way through. On the 90th minute, Rabat Ajax was unlucky as Fuster hit the woodwork

Rabat Ajax mentor Silvio Vella opted for a defensive 4-5-1 formation as Lithuanian Nerijuls Astrauskas was preferred a lone striker supported by captain Adam Smeir. Recent signing Clive Brincat was aong the substitutes. Rabat Ajax players was all making their full debut expect duo foreigners Ivan Carapic and German Heiner Backhaus, who won the league championship with Valletta 5 years ago.

Qormi coach Stephen Azzopardi opted for offensive 4-3-3 formation as Joseph Chetcuti and recent signing Leighton Grech was supporting centre striker Abubaker Bello Osagie, who signed a new one deal last month. Veteran Geatan Spiteri was out for a match ban he received in last league match last season.

61min: Rabat Ajax was close to equalized as Yan Cauchi dribbled past two Qormi players, who assist Smeir and the 27 year old saw his shot passed inches wide.

Old Firm derby ends in 1-1 draw

Sliema Wanderers and Floriana marked their Premier League start with a battling 1-1 draw.

Portuguese Valdo Alhinho who with goalkeeper Jurgen Borg was the Greens top players opened the score as his flying header beaten Henry Bonello. Minutes later veteran Ivan Woods, who the past two season was Floriana player headed home a corner for a fair draw.

Sliema Wanderers new mentor Alfonso Greco opted for an offensive 4-3-3 formation as returning Ivan Woods was preferred as centre striker. Sliema Wanderers new staff gave the debut to Branislav Timotic, Matias Muchardi and Pablo Gonzalez, Miguel Ciantar and John Mintoff was returning from season loan at Balzan and Floriana respectively.

Floriana new coach Mark Wright selected a caution 4-5-1 formation as Ryan Darmanin was the lone striker for the Greens, Portuguese Valdo Alhinho and Kane Farrugia made their debut for the Greens.

First Half

32min: Floriana opened the score as new signing Valdo Alhinho headed home a header pass by Ryan Darmanin.

34min Sliema was close to make it 1-1 as a overhead kick by Alex Muscat was turn to a corner by Jurgen Borg. Minute later Ivan Woods returned with a goal against his former side as he headed home past Borg for a deserved equalizer.

40min: Christian Caruana shot cross was almost caught Henry Bonello out of his position.

43min: Ivan Woods free kick hit the woodwork.
