Sliema W. grab dramatic win, Cassar blunder earns 1-1 draw for Floriana

Sliema Wanderers got a dramatic 3-2 win against Tarxien Rainbows . The Blues came from two goals behind to beat Tarxien Rainbows 3-2

Sliema were back in action after last week’s 1-1 draw with Floriana. Alfonso Greco’s side had trailed 2-0 before scoring twice in stoppage-time to recover from an embarrassing defeat.

Brazilian striker Danilo Dos Santos opened a two goal cushion for the Rainbows. However, Sliema winger Miguel Ciantar pulled one back before the end of the first half.

The game took a twist when star player Danilo missed a penalty and was then sent off . In the dying minutes a stunning goal by former Birkirkara triallist striker Omar El Ghaouti and Paltemio Barbetti’s inswinger gave a much needed victory for the Wanderers.

Coach Danilo Doncic was coaching for the first time against his former side. Tarxien Rainbows made two changes from last week’s 1-0 defeat against champions Valletta. Goalkeeper David Cassar replaced Nicky Vella, while debutant Evaldo Dos Santos replaced James Shield. The Serbian coach fielded a 4-4-2 formation with Carlo Mamo and Orosco Anonam playing against their former side.

Sliema Wanderers mentor Alfonso Greco gave the debut to Italian midfielder Paltemio Barbetti as he replaced Branislav Timotic. Just before the kick off Sliema were forced to replace Ivan Woods with Omar El Ghouti.

This week Sliema Wanderers appointedf ormer Mellieha coach Jo Jo Bajada as their new assistant coach.

First Half

A minute of silence was observed before the kick off following the death of former prime minister Dom Mintoff.

4min: Captain Alex Muscat had the first chance of the game as he saw his low shot from inside the penalty area saved by goalkeeper David Cassar.

14min: Lucas De Castro free kick was off target.

20min: Tarxien Rainbows deservedly took the lead as Brazilian Danilo Dos Santos headed home past goalkeeper Henry Bonello for the lead.

26min: Danilo doubled as he again headed a corner by Lucas De Castro to give the Blues a perfect cushion.

40min: Sliema Wanderers reduced the gap as youngster Miguel Ciantar’s powerful low drive gave no chance to David Cassar.

Second Half

Penalty Tarxien Rainbows!!!! Danilo Dos Santos was on the verge to hit a hat trick, but his 11 meter shot was off target.

67min: Sliema Wanderers was close to make it 2-2 but Omae El Ghouti powerful shot hit the woodwork.

89min: Omae El Ghouti make it 2-2 after his powerful shot gave no chance to goalkeeper David Cassar

90min: New signing Paltemio Barbetti scored the winner from Muchardi corner, as his striker beaten Cassar for a dramatic 3-2 win.

Cassar blunder earns 1-1 draw for Floriana

Floriana were held by a battling 10-man Hamrun Spartans side in today’s second match at the Hibernians Stadium. The Greens benefited from an Andrea Cassar blunder.

Former Floriana nursery player Gianluca Calabretta gave an early second-half lead after his powerful header beat debutant Jonathan Debono, as he was served a cross by Bulgarian Nikolay Bozhov.

Floriana managed to draw level on the 79th minute as Ryan Darmanin stole the ball from the feet of goalkeeper Andrea Cassar to score a deserved equalizer. Hamrun Spartans captain Roderick Fenech then was sent off. Both clubs are still in search for their first win of the season after opening draws against Balzan FC and Sliema Wanderers respectively.

Floriana coach Mark Wright made several changes as he gave the debut to Englishmen Aaron Brown, Aman Verma and Carl Tremarco as they replaced Owen Bugeja, Thomas Paris and Ryan Darmanin, while Trevor Cilia was given the full debut and replaced Clyde Borg. Floriana also gave the debut to Jonathan Debono who signed for the Greens on Friday afternoon. He replaced youngster Jurgen Borg.

Floriana are still without Sunday Wasiu. Floriana were coming from a battling 1-1 draw against Sliema Wanderers.

Hamrun coach Stefan Sultana fielded last week’s line up. He opted for  a 4-4-2 formation with Terence Scerri started alongside Bulgarian upfront Nikolay Bozhov. The Black and Reds gained 1 points last week as they finish in 2-2 draw against Balzan Youths
