Birkirkara outclass sloppy Wanderers

Friday, April 9, 2010, 19:16

A collective and effective performance by pace setters Birkirkara led them to a 3-0 victory over a depleted Sliema side. Both teams had players missing namely, Pedro Dos Santos Calcado of Sliema and Alan Tabone of Birkirkara both suspended. The Stripes were also without midfielder Rowen Muscat who was ill.

Mark Marlow, who watched the game from the Sliema Wanderers FC Executive box in the Millennium Stand (serving a one match ban), experienced a horrible nightmare as his players were outclassed by a superior Birkirkara side. Sliema who have conceded a dozen goals in their last three games (v Qormi 0-4, v Hamrun 2-5 and today v Bkara 0-3), committed too many defensive mistakes that led to their opponent’s easy goals.

Birkirkara went a goal up from a fine header by Nikola Vukanac following a George Mallia corner. Five minutes into the second half, Trevor Cilia hit home after a miss-kick by central defender Mifsud. With a sky high morale Zammit’s players maintained the tempo and left no, or little, space to Sliema. The BOV Premier League leaders secured the three points through Trevor Cilia who once again infiltrated the sloppy Sliema defense to make the final score 3-0.

Now all the pressure is on Valletta who take on Tarxien Rainbows on Saturday afternoon. Valletta need a win to keep the four point difference between them and Birkirkara. If Tarxien win against Valletta, Birkirkara’s advantage will be extended to seven points. All actions minute by minute of Sliema v Birkirkara is reported below.
