Sliema 4

Vittoriosa 3

Those present this afternoon at the Hibernians Stadium witnessed a high intensity match with a seven goal thriller as Sliema emerged winners 4-3 after a late but glorious comeback.

A direct encounter between two teams that have lost their last league match. Sliema were coming from a 3-2 defeat to Hamrun, whilst Vittoriosa were coming from a 1-0 defeat to Tarxien.

Sliema had John Mintoff and Obiefule ruled out due to injuries and Winston Muscat on the other hand had Carlos Compagnoli not available as it is reported he underwent a minor operation (otroscopy) in his knee.

This was Sliema’s first win in eight games this season. Their last win was ironically against Vittoriosa on October 18. Without any doubt Lachkhem’s contribution including a personal brace was instrumental for Marlow’s side.

Sliema took a double lead in the first 16 minutes of the match but lost what they had worked for by the half time whistle as their opponents leveled the score to 2-2.

The Stars went 3-2 in front  but suffered a major set back after one of their stalwarts namely Edison Louis dos Santos was given marching orders by the match official after a double booking after 73minutes of play.

First Half:

26min. Vittoriosa 2-1. The Cottonera side are awarded a penalty after Failla floored Edison Louis dos Santos inside the penalty area. Referee Marco Borg signals the 11 meter mark and Edison Louis dos Santos beats Szenpeteri.

37min. Jorge Santos Silva misses the target after a 30 meter shot.

43min. Virroriosa 2-2. A perfectly executed free kick by Jorge Santos Silva sends the Stars in the dressing room in high spirit.

Second Half.

71min. Simon Agius saves a powerful shot by Lima.

72min. Vittoriosa 3-2. A well taken counter attack by Muscat’s team paved way for a sterling comeback. Edison dos Santos cuts a low cross towards Anthony Ewurum who nets the ball.

73min. A late tackle by Edison Louis dos Santos is punished by Referee Borg with the player’s second booking, thus leaving the Stars in 10 men.

92min. Sliema 3-3. Jean Pierre Mifsud Triganza heads home from inside Agius’ area for the equilizer after Vittoriosa were constantly being put under pressure.

94min. Sliema 4-3. Sliema’s impressive come back finished off in style. Tunisian international Lachkhem meets at the appropriate time a Mifsud Triganza cross to the joy of the Blues and to the despair of all Vittoriosa fans who could not believe their eyes.
