Sliema stun Neptunes to force championship decider

Thursday, September 8, 2011, 23:21

Sliema Mc Donalds beat Neptunes Emirates 12-11 in Game 4 of the BOV First Division Playoff Finals to level the series at 2-2 and take this year’s league title to the wire.

Ryan Colerio played a blinder in the Sliema goal, denying a number of sure goals to his opponents and helping his team to grow in confidence, as Bogdan Rath and John Soler sounded the battle cry for the Blues. On their part Neptunes were very erratic with Niki Lanzon and Valdimir Gojkovic having a relatively quiet game and showing signs of indiscipline in defence.

A fine pass from Soler found the unmarked Rath in the centre who opened the score for the Blues, while captain Clint Debono made it 2-0 with his trademark powerful shot that took a deflection off Molnar. Rath then gave a precise pass to Rajmund Fodor to swim past Niki Lanzon and slot under the helpless Ian Bugeja. Lanzon made amends a few seconds later with a fine shot to start off the Red’s scoresheet with Tamas Molnar hitting the post a while later. Mark Meli made it 4-1 for Sliema from a man-up situation but Neptunes got back in the game with two successive goals to end the session 4-3.

Fodor scored a delightful lob to open the scoring in the second session, and from a subsequent man-up Matthew Pisani missed two easy chances in quick succession with only Coleiro to beat. Rath picked Nicolai Lubrano in the centre, with the Sliema youngster firing home without hesitation to make the score 6-3 for the Blues. Steve Camilleri pulled one back for Neptunes while Lanzon made it 6-5 with a long range shot but Soler restored Sliema’s two goal advantage to send both teams for their half time talk with a 7-5 scorline in Sliema’s favour.

Neptunes came out strongly in the third session with Camilleri scoring a beautiful goal, beating four Sliema players and the goaler. Bugeja was Neptunes saviour as he parried a Rath penalty, and Molnar tied the game from a man-up set. John Soler then went on to score what was the finest goal of this game with a tip that stunned Bugeja. With Michele Stellini fouled out, it was Molnar who scored three more goals to put Neptunes 10-8 in front for the first time in the game. Rath, who was all alone on the rights hand side, reduced the arrears to make the score 10-9 at the end of the third session.

Rath kept the goals coming in the fourth session as he tied the game with Steve Camilleri hitting the post with a long range shot at the other end of the pool. Jerome Gabarretta liberated himself from Jordan Camilleri’s marking to put Sliema in the commanding seat once again, but it was Molnar who kept Neptunes afloat, making the score 11-11 with three minutes left in the game. It was national team captain John Soler who scored the game winner as Neptunes squandered what could have been a decisive man-up set and a few seconds later, Lanzon’s lob hit the upright and that sent the Sliema clan into merited celebrations.

The final deciding encounter of this playoffs series will be played on Saturday at 5:15pm

Neptunes ghandhom 4 plejers kbar, Gojkovic, Molnar , Stevie u Niki Lanzon, imma l-bqija, l-ohrajn m’ghamlu xejn ilbierah, tort taghhom li Neptunes tilfu. Meta loghba tkun tahraq, lil Stellini qatt ma tarah, anki ilbierah zero kien, u Pisani, Cocci, hu Stevie u Gravina m’ghamlux wahda sew bejniethom. U l-goaler laqa l-penalty u l-bqija ma laqax ballun.

Sliema jiddependu fuq il-barranin u Soler, u anki Pawlu ghadu hemm, imma l-plejers l-ohra kollha jaghtu li jafu. Sliema jiehduh il-league issa

    … Gojkovic u Lanzon sfaxxaw f’din il-loghba

imma Markoch ghalfejn ma tefax lil Lanzon bhala centre u hareg lil Molnar fuq barra ghax kull shot li ta Molnar kien goal hlief wiehed. Kellu jadatta it-tattika ghalija.

At this point in Neptunes iridu jinsew il prestazzjoni tal bierah u jighabu bi-serenita tas soltu u jirbhu

Forsi mhux perfetti bhas-soltu, imma xorta kien tajbin Gojkovic u Lanzon. U jekk sfaxxaw huma, l-ohrajn x’ghamlu mela, ghax hlief Stevie u Molnar, hadd m’ghamel mossa wahda tajba. Biex jirbah, team ma jistax jiddependi biss fuq 4 plejers, tajbin kemm huma tajbin
