Qormi emerged winners in this first, nervy encounter of the season, a match which was highly conditioned by an episode ten minutes into the second half. Fielding a very young squad, Hotsticks managed to keep head-to-head for most of the seventy minutes. The final score, however, does not give much credit to the team’s performance and determination. There is a lot this young team has to learn but the future is very promising.

Sliema took the field with confidence. Most of the play was concentrated in midfield and even though the Qormi goalkeeper was never really tested, they manged to keep the yellows away from their Dee. Against the flow of play Qormi took the lead from a well taken counter attack twenty-one minutes into the first half. Hotsticks’ reaction was imminent and a few minutes later they levelled the score through debuting Silas Plaehn. Their joy was short-lived as from yet another counter attack Qormi managed to go ahead once again. The first half ended with Hotsticks trailing Qormi by one goal.

The second half started on the same note. Qormi were strong on possession but Hotsticks were organised and conscious of their means to get something out this match. Things changed completely ten minutes into the second half when, away from the action, Lukas Plaehn was hit by Steve Tanti of Qormi for no reason whatsoever. Players and match officials gathered around the same Tanti and Steven Cachia who had pushed him away. At this point, Qormi defender Ryan Brincat approached Plaehn who was lying on the ground and cowardly kicked him in his face. This incident was missed by all the three officials but not by the Sliema clan. Anger ruled for the remainder of the match and what was until then a decent hockey match, turned into a fiasco. This is when experience makes a difference and in the dying minutes of the match Qormi manage to increase the lead with another two goals.
