Sliema Mc Donalds yesterday evening beat Neptunes Emirates 9-8 (1-4, 3-4, 1-1, 3-0) to claim the first honour of the 2012 season organised by the ASA.

Sliema had thrashed Neptunes 13-5 in game 1 of the final, but Neptunes returned the favour to win game 2 with a 12-6 score, sending both teams to a deciding game three. In yesterday’s game Sliema took an early 4 goal advantage thanks to effective defending on Neptunes’ key shooters.

The advantage was comfortably maintained till the beginning of the fourth session, with Neptunes hitting the back of the net with 3 successive goals in the last session to bring the score to 9-8 in Sliema’s favour. In the dying minutes of the game the Reds missed some open chances that could have sent the game to extra time, but Sliema held on to win their seventh Winter League Cup and the first one to mark their Centenary celebrations this year.

At the end of the match, Sliema captain John Soler was presented with the winners trophy by Peter Perotti, Chief Officer Bank of Valletta, to kick off the Blues’ celebrations.
