7th July 2015: A strong squad of 61 youth and senior swimmers represented Sirens ASC at the recent National Championships held at the National Pool, Tal Qroqq.

Dedication and commitment paid off as the squad brought home 35 gold, 34 silver and 29 bronze medals, finishing second overall in the annual club competition.

In the opening relay – mixed  4 x 50m  – Andrew Chetcuti, Charis Ceccarelli,  Matthew Zammit and Kim Castelletti powered home to win the squad’s first gold and set the tone for later, impressive results.

Chetcuti and Zammit appeared on the podium numerous times during the three-day meet and although Matthew Zammit won his 50m and 100m freestyle convincingly, his times were not quite fast enough to qualify for the World Championships.  Undeterred, he is currently swimming at the World University games in Korea.

Jeremy Bugeja, Ella Calleja Rogers, Leah Tanti and Daniel Sammut finished on the podium after every race, as did the boys relay team who were exceptional.

The pressure of the event didn’t seem to trouble the younger swimmers who performed brilliantly, either achieving personal bests, or swimming within three per cent of their personal best time.

Of particular note were young swimmers, Emily Grech Carr whose improvement was significant and 10 year old Sasha Gatt.  Undoubtedly a future Sirens champion, Sasha swam eight races, achieved eight personal best times and appeared on the podium for six of them.

Improvements were obvious all round, especially when set against a difficult season for some, including periods of illness and the challenges of juggling Matsec and O-level commitments with the demands of daily training.

Training has continued for Jeremy Bugeja, Charis Ceccarelli, Kyle Buhagiar, Daniel Sammut and his brother, Jonathan Sammut,  who have all been chosen to swim in the 2015 FISEC Games later this month, but the rest of the squad are taking a well earned break before pre-season training recommences mid July.
