After a 30 year playing career, Silvio Cassar obtained the FECC, the European Basketball License.  This is a 3 year course of high-class basketball education from the best coaches in Europe. The three-year cycle Fiba Europe Coaching Certificate class was held in 3 different cities during the 3 years period, in Pardubice, Cech Republic, in Vilnius, Lithuania and this last of took place in Tallinn, Estonia. During these 3 years, he saw the 3 major youth completion starting from U16, U18 and U20 Men.

Silvio Cassar had to face, besides a lot of good clinics, the final exams in order to graduate and to be an official FIBA Certified Coach.

Along with the mentor of this unique program was Svetislav Pesic (head coach of Bayern Munich/Germany), a lot of other top coaches such as Kestutis Kemzura (a.o. bronze medal winner at the 2010 World Championship with Lithuania), Pablo Laso (head coach of Real Madrid/Spain), Janez Drvaric (youth team manager at Olimpija Ljubljana) and Sasa Jakovljevic (strength and conditioning expert) shared their knowledge with the 50 participants of the class. Another highlight was the presentation of Maurizio Gerardhini, general manager of the Toronto Raptors in the NBA, talking about his career and experiences on how to manage a group.

The last year of the 2011-2013 FECC class was closed with the official closing and certificate giving ceremony in presence of the Fiba Europe Secretary General Kamil Novak, all the lecturers and Michael Schwarz, head of the Fiba Europe Coaching Department.

Finally , Silvio Cassar want to deeply thank everybody who made it possible to experience this unique and privileged program! Congratulations to Fiba Europe, in special to Michael Schwarz and his team, for putting together such a high level program.

Here is what Silvio Cassar has to say:

To be a Fiba Europe certified coach means a lot to me as it is something that not everybody gets the chance to do. During these three years, I was able to learn from the best coaches such as Svetislav Pesic, Janez Drvaric, Kestutis Kemzura or Pablo Laso, just to name a few. It is impressive to see with what passion they are doing their job and loving this sport.
Besides this, we also had the chance to see and to follow the best players in Europe, starting with the U16 up to U20 Men (some of them even got already drafted in the NBA) at the different European Championships.

Finally, one of the best things I could experience in these three years was the contact to all the other participants of the class. It is always nice and also very important to meet new people from different countries that are sharing the same love for basketball than you do. And hopefully, I can meet them all again in the future, coaching different teams…
I feel very privileged that I could do this program, and I hope that other coaches from Malta can get the same chance to do it!“
