April has been a very satisfying month for Charles Micallef, who first scooped up first prize in the German English Scrabble Nationals held in Berlin and then went on to crown himself Malta Champion for the first time ever after four months of arduous competition that saw him fight neck and neck with five time National Champion David Delicata, who conceded victory only in the last game of the last match.

Delicata’s record over the first four months of competitions organized by the Malta Scrabble Club has not been entirely bleak even by his high standards. Apart from registering a staggering overall and average number of bingos in the championship, over a hundred and over two per game respectively, Delicata has also won the two one-day tournaments played since the beginning of the year.

Another one-day tournament, and a special one at that, the 9th Malta International Scrabble Open Early Bird, is the next event on the Club’s Calendar. Maintaining his perfect record of victories in one-day events will be a tall order for Delicata who will be up against the challenge from foreign opponents.

On his part, Micallef will be looking to assert his new status as German and Malta champ in the three-day 9th MISO Main Event, where the opposition, including the likes of Englishmen Mark Nyman and David Webb and Israeli ace Evan Cohen, will be even tougher .

The two-day 9th MISO Supplement, at the end of one week of international Scrabble between 29th April and 5th May sponsored by SportMalta, Malta Tourism Authority, and Intercomp, will be another opportunity for three time Malta Champion Mario Saliba, who placed a distant but creditable third in the Malta Championship, as well as for Josephine Mayo, Frans Faruggia and Dominic Borg, the Division II Malta Champion, runner-up and third placed respectively, to register some positive results on the world stage of competitive Scrabble.

April kien xhar sodisfaċenti għal Charles Micallef, li l-ewwel kiseb l-ewwel post fil- German English Scrabble Nationals li saru f’Berlin u mbagħad libes il-kuruna ta’ ċampjin ta’ Malta għall-ewwel darba wara erbgħa xhur ta’ kompetizzjoni qalila li ratu jiġġieled ras imb ras kontra ċ-ċampjin ta’ Malta għal ħames darbiet David Delicata, li ċeda biss fl-aħħar logħba ta’ l-aħħar rawnd.

Ir-rekord ta’ Delicata f’ dawn l-ewwel erbgħa xhur ta’ kompetizzjonijiet mtella’ mill-Malta Scrabble Club ma kienx daqshekk ħażin lanqas għal xi ħadd tal-kalibru tiegħu. Minbarra li kellu numru totali u medju impressjonanti ta’ bingos fil-kampjonat, ‘l fuq minn mija u ‘l fuq minn tnejn f’ kull logħba rispettivament, Delicata rebaħ ukoll iż-żewġ kompetizzjonijiet ta’ ġurnata li ntlagħbu mill-bidu tas-sena ‘l hawn.
