Alison Vella and Wayne Galea shooting for gold

This weekend saw the start of the first local/international shooting matches with Malta’s annual participation in the UK Eley-NSRA Target Shooting Competitions. The shoots were held this weekend at the Bidnija Indoor Range in both Air-Rifle & Air Pistol. British International Referee, Mr Colin Watson, who has also been assigned judging duties at the forthcoming Glasgow Commonwealth Games, was the guest of honour at the range to oversee these competitions. This was done in conjunction with local international referee Mr Gino Galea with assistance from Ms Lilian Calleja.

A record number of shooters took part in exciting competitions where the results will now be sent to the English National Smallbore Rifle Association for classification with other British and foreign shooters participating in this highly popular competition.
In the Air-Rifle Event, it was a great day for the young shooters. Gianluca Azzopardi and Isaac Zammit both finished in 2nd and 3rd place respectively with a good, equal  361/400 points , but there was no beating Alison Vella who won first place scoring 374 points in the process.  In the finals however, the classification changed with newcomer Wayne Galea taking second place and with Azzopardi finishing in 3rd. Alison was the final gold medalist in this event.
The Air-Pistol competition was also hotly contested with 4 shooters vying for 1st place. In the qualification round an excellent score of 366 /400 points by veteran Ray Cacciatolo, landed him in temporary 1st place where he was followed by Eleanor Bezzina (358 points), and this year’s UK’s Eley-NSRA gold medallist Mario Mallia Milanes with 351 points. After the finals, the leader-board changed with 4th placed shooter Stephen Vassallo taking the honours with a tremendous final shoot of 190.1 points to beat Cacciattolo to second place with just a margin of 3.3points. Eleanor Bezzina was 3rd with 148.9 points.
At  the end, the medals were presented to the winners by Mr Colin Watson himself and who was full of praise for the organisation and the high level that Target Shooting in Malta has reached.
