Saturday a ‘must win’ for Malta’s rugby squad

After their convincing win against out paced Latvia in Riga, the Malta national rugby team now face a stern test at home against the super fit Lithuanians. This is really another “must win” match because Malta need to finish well enough up the European Pool 2A table to avoid fund draining play offs to avoid relegation.

However, “complacency will not affect our performance on Saturday,” stressed National Coach, Damian Neill.  “We are delighted with our win over Latvia last week, but well aware that  Lithuania hold the world record unbeaten run and rank several places above Malta in the IRB rankings. Furthermore several of their players are professionals in the Russian League and the majority are army athletes, so we will have to be at our very best.”

In dry conditions on the wide Hibs Stadium pitch, Malta stand a good chance of imposing their quick handling, fast running style.

An exciting match is expected on Saturday.  Regardless of  the threat from Lithuania, Malta have now risen to their highest ever ranking of 46th in the IRB world table. Lithuania are 39th in the world and currently second in the group with 14 points.  Their last match was a thrilling 30-all draw with Sweden at home.

As ever, the great roar of the Maltese supporters, led by South End Core, will make a massive contribution to the will and skill of the magnificent men of Malta to continue their success.
