San Giljan claw their way back to the top of the standings

BOV Premier League

Sirens Ritter Sport 14 – San Giljan Giuseppe’s 15
(4-6, 5-4, 3-4, 2-1)

San Giljan clawed their way back to the top of the standings, although with a game more than Sliema, who play today, against Exiles. It was a hard fought victory for the Saints, with Sirens pushing them all the way to the final buzzer.

San Giljan had Nikola Sutic back, after five missed matches, instead of Bogdan Rath, and he replied with a poker of goals, though he missed a third session penalty throw, saved by Alan Grech. Sirens also had Csaba Kiss failing with his penalty, saved at the other end, by Dean Camilleri.

The goals came thick and fast in the opening session, with the Saints on a double lead. Sirens were back in the next period, despite the missed penalty. San Giljan had twice increased their advantage, but Sirens battled back, to just a goal behind, at the interval, on a 9-10 score.

With the saints’ missed penalty after the break, it was Claudio Spiteri de Barro’s brace which had Sirens in front for the first time in the match. They didn’t last long, as San Giljan rallied back, to go into another double lead, after three sessions of play, on a 14-12 score. The Saints had Matthew Zammit with another thunderbolt, for a better lead, but Sirens were not done yet, as they were breathing down the Saints’ necks once more. But there was no overhaul for them, and San Giljan grimly held on to their slight advantage, for three points, and a return to winning ways, after their blip against Exiles.
