Italian Serie A basketball side Trenkwalder Reggio Emilia have signed 21-year old Samuel Deguara on a two year contract.

The Maltese center joined the club recently for tryout and it seems he did enough to earn a deal. He played for the club at the Summer League in Imola and also practiced with Partizan Belgrade in August. Last season Deguara played for Chimica D’Agostino Bari as he was sent on loan from Benetton Treviso. He had 4.8 ppg and 4.9 rpg in 34 games with Bari.

With his 2.24 metres in height, Deguara is the tallest player in the Serie A League. During the player’s official presentation last week, Reggio Emilia’s sports director Frosini expressed his satisfaction for securing Deguara’s signature. “I see a lot of potential in this player and it’s a gamble for us but also for him to prove himself in Reggio. He’s got physical abilities that no one else has got in Italy and also in Europe, together with a good technical base on whcih we can work” Frosini added.

The “gentle giant”, as some are already referring to Deguara, said that he was glad to join Reggio in what will be his first taste of Serie A basketball. Although looking a bit shy during the press conference, Samuel Deguara explained his sporting history which included stints as a football goalkeeper and also mentioned Yoa Ming who is an inspirational figure for him.

Deguara went on to say how he worked hard on improving his free throws, his speed and also worked on his balance given his high centre of gravity which sometimes is the cause of a number of fouls.

Good luck Samuel!
