Badminton Malta has recently organised the 43rd edition of its National Championships. More familiarly known as the “Nationals”, these Championships are the major event in Badminton Malta’s calendar as they bring together all the top local talents in a unique competition of high-level play.

Since the 27th edition held in 1998, Badminton Malta has sub-titled this event as the “Paddy Stubbs Memorial Championships”, to keep alive the memory of this well-known philanthropist and sports benefactor.

This year’s edition saw Fiorella Sadowski taking the limelight as she won all the categories she took part in. In the Women’s Singles, Sadowski faced Marica Micallef in the final. The match was a balanced one, with Sadowski
taking an early advantage and just doing enough to keep Micallef at a safe distance. In the end, Sadowski claimed the match 21-14 21-16, to claim her third consecutive Women’s Singles title.

The two Singles finalists teamed up in the Women’s Doubles, where they found little trouble in overcoming youngsters Sarah Fava / Cheryl Gilford, 21-11 21-8, in the final. The latter had been awarded a walkover by last year’s champions, Joanne Cassar / Jacqueline Grech Licari, in the semi-finals due to Grech Licari injuring herself during the championships. However, one must commend Fava / Gilford for reaching the finals at such a young age.

Sadowski completed the treble by winning the Mixed Doubles. Partnered by Stephen Ferrante, the reigning champions’ last hurdle was made up of duo Joanne Cassar / Edmond Abela. The first set could have gone either way, with the defending champions visibly in trouble throughout thanks to a fine performance put up by Cassar / Abela who were leading for most of the first set. However, Sadowski / Ferrante re-gained composure in the final stages of the set, managing to claim the set 22-20. The first set win seemed to give them confidence as they controlled the second, winning 21-13, thus retaining the Mixed Doubles title.

The Men’s Singles final saw the return of Kenneth Vella and Stefan Salomone – two players who were missing in last year’s edition. After an initial balanced start in the first set, Salomone seemed to gradually gain the edge over his opponent and was leading 11-3 at the interval. Vella tried to retaliate, but Salomone remained steadily in control to win the set 21-8. The start of the second set augured well for Vella as he surged 4-0 ahead. However, Salomone kept cool and turned matters around, to lead 11-8 at the interval. From then on, it was downhill for Salomone as he won point after point, taking the set 21-12 and thus claiming his 7th Men’s Singles title.

The Men’s Doubles final, scheduled for the 1st of May, has been postponed due to the reigning champions and finalists Samuel Cali / Stephen Ferrante being both injured. The decision was taken by BadmintonMaltaafter their opponents, Aldo Polidano / Stefan Salomone, both agreed to play the fixture once the condition of their opponents improved.

Badminton Malta commended the sportsmanship shown by Polidano / Salomone. It also expressed satisfaction at the high standard of play throughout these Championships. This augured well for the future of this sport.

It also thanked all the sponsors, in particular Mrs. Janatha Stubbs andFortBlocks, as well as all the volunteers whose valid contribution was instrumental in the successful staging of this event.
