Run for fun with MOC

Friday, June 4, 2010, 12:34

We all know about the Olympic Games and the International Olympic Committee (IOC); in fact the IOC has been around since 1894 when Baron Pierre de Courbetin took the initiative to reintroduce the Olympic Games as we now know them, with the first Modern Games taking place in Athens in 1896.  The creation of the IOC took place on the 23rd June and as a way of commemorating this movement the Olympic Day is celebrated around the world.  The tradition of holding the Run on the weekend before or after 23 June, with an Olympic Day Run is also the tradition of the Malta Olympic Committee with this run becoming more and more popular every year.

The Olympic Day Run has developed into the only worldwide celebration of the Olympic Day, and helps to spread the Olympic ideals to every corner of the world. The purpose and objective of this run is all about promoting the practice of participation in sport by all, from all corners of the world and all walks of life, regardless of ones athletics ability.

This year’s run will take place on 27th June 2010 (Sunday) and will follow the same routes as last year in Bugibba. Participation is FREE of charge. Again we are teaming up with McDonald’s and the MAAA’s to organize this Run.  As usual official Olympic Day Run T-shirts will be given to all participants including an official Olympic Day Run IOC Certificate signed by the President of the IOC Dr. Jacques Rogge.  Applications will be readily available at any McDonald’s restaurants and through the offices of the MOC (and our website www.nocmalta.org).  Registration is also accepted on the day of the run at 8.00am.  Routes will be as follows:

a) Fun run for kids (up to 12 – parents are encouraged to join along) – 2.5k (Start time: 9.00am-9.30am)
Starting line:  Bugibba, from McDonalds to Kiosk/Square
b) Fun run for kids 13 and more – 5k (Start time: 8.30am)
