Rugby: MRFU – Mediterranean Bank Cup kicks off

Tuesday, March 3, 2015, 16:34

Saturday 28th February, will see some interesting Rugby played in Marsa. Apart from the usual Ladies matches starting at 11am, there will be some interesting challenges as Second Division teams take on First Division opposition.

High flying Stompers, the Cisk Lager League champions, are being challenged by Second Division Gladiators, who will need to work a miracle or bump into a very careless Stompers side. However, the Second Division champions, Falcons, might just have a chance against the off form Kavallieri.

In addition, the Scottish Rugby Football Union have sent their Referee Development Manager Mr. Colin Brett, to put the Maltese officials through a tough course on Friday and Saturday. The SRFU have been helping referee development in Malta for several years now. Malta has since produced three international referees, with another on the verge of recognition as well as three match commissioners, who have all officiated around Europe. This is quite an achievement for so small a country.

Junior Rugby continues on Sunday morning as the boys and girls step up their training for the Sicily Tour, scheduled for the end March. Our youths are hoping to reproduce their fine performances of last year, when Rowhanne Zahra, former Valletta Lions player, was voted Player of the Tournament last season, out of 600 athletes.

Further excitement is building up, as to who will be the lucky winner of the forthcoming DHL Express initiative to send a Maltese Youth Rugby Player to present Match Ball at Rugby World Cup 2015 during the start of the World Cup match Scotland vs. USA at Leeds Stadium in the last week of September.

The National Rugby Team U18s will also be playing, for the first time, European Division D Tournament in Andorra, from the 7th to the 12th April.

“This is a very exciting time for the Malta Rugby Football Union, there is a lot happening, we are working hard to further strengthen our National side which have given us some fantastic results and emotions on the field” said Brian Dalton, President of the MRFU. “We are also nurturing the sport by working with our youths. These are the future of Rugby and we are working hard to make sure our winning brand remains such” concluded Dalton.

The Malta Rugby Football Union is supported by Cisk, Intercontinental Hotel, Mediterranean Bank, Gasan Mamo Insurance, GazanZammit, O’Neill’s, Melita, Bortex, Living Well and PWC.
