Women’s rugby continues to grow in Malta with two local schools playing each other in regular matches. Recently, girls from San Andrea played Her Lady Immaculate in a thrilling match that was heading towards a draw before one of the Immaculate girls broke through to score the winning try.

The match game was the third such game played between these two schools with the other matches resulting in draws, thanks to the teachers and local rugby clubs helping out with training sessions to develop their teams.

Peter Bradley and Stefan De Marco at Her Lady Immaculate have been working for the past year to build up this school team and have done an amazing job with some of their girls taking part in the recent exhibition match during April’s International match between Malta and Croatia.

The San Andrea girls were kitted out in the Overseas RFC kit as Club President, Brian Dalton and Ladies Coach, Charlene Curmi been have involved in training sessions at the Mgarr school.  “It’s not what they’re used to, said Mr Dalton, but clearly the experience has been enjoyable and appearing centre-stage at the International was the icing on the cake.”

With hard work being done behind the scenes, women’s youth rugby in Malta is growing in an effort to feed the women’s teams that take part in regular competitions each year.  Existing teams include Kavallieri, Overseas, Alligators, Valletta and Falcons, from whom the best will be drawn to take part in the European 7’s Tournament in Latvia later this month.
