The forthcoming edition of the March 31st Regatta will be held this Saturday 23rd March at the Valletta Harbour.

This was confirmed earlier today by Parliamentary Secretary Dr Stefan Bountempo who has Sports under his portfolio within the Ministry for Education.

Dr Bountempo said that he was extremely happy that his first official media event was the launching of the March 2013 Freedom Day Regatta since this sport was very much at his heart.

The Parliamentary Secretary vouched his personal commitment to this sport and also promised that the Government will support all the participating clubs.

Six of the seven traditional Clubs will compete in the Open category whilst the seventh Club Birzebbugia will only have their boats in water for the Category B races.

Senglea, Cospicua, Vittoriosa, Kalkara, Marsa and Marsamxett will all be in full force on Saturday to try and win the traditional Shield.

The first race on Saturday will commence at noon. There are 10 races in all, five in each category. The traditional boats that race in the March and the September Regatta races are Dghajes C tal-Pass long traditional Maltese boat with two oarsmen, Dghajes B tal-Pass same long traditional Maltese boat with four oarsmen, Dghajes A tal-Midalji long but lighter boat with four oarsmen, Frejgatina small boat with two oarsmen and coxswain with boat oarsmen facing the start and il-Kajjik small traditional boat but bigger than the Frejgatina with two oarsmen one sitting and one standing.
