Referees’ Academy Annual Weekend Live-In heldThursday, January 19, 2017, 20:25
The programme of this live-in for twelve participants was organized by the Refereeing Centre and coordinated by the Referees’ Academy’s Project Leader Paul Caruana assisted by James Farrugia from the Refereeing Centre’s Recruitment and Retention Unit.
The live-in was officially opened by Kevin Azzopardi, Director of Refereeing, and Paul Caruana as Project Leader of the Referees Academy gave details on the weekend programme. On Friday keynote speakers included Assistant Directors of Refereeing Andrè Arciola and Philip Agius who addressed the students on ‘The ideal match official’ and ‘Effective Communication between match officials’, respectively.
The full-day’s program prepared for Saturday, included:
- a good mix of lectures, with the keynote speakers being FIFA Referee Alan Mario Sant, the Head of the Instructors and Observers Unit Alexander Arena, and Academy Project Leader Paul Caruana who addressed those present on ‘Basic Requirements for Efficient Performances’, ‘Free kicks Management’ and ‘Pre Match Preparation’, respectively;
- a practical session conducted by the referees’ fitness coach Ronald Zammit, at the Sirens Stadium and;
- attendance at the Centenary Stadium to watch the BOV First Division match between Marsa and Żebbuġ Rangers, which was a very interesting part of the live-in when the students had the opportunity to listen to the pre-match talk by the referee of the match to the other match officials and then follow the match from the VIP stand where the students took some notes / observations on the performance of the refereeing team.
On Sunday morning, following Holy Mass at Qawra Parish Church, the programme continued with a video clip quiz on the Laws of the Game prepared by Kevin Azzopardi, Director of Refereeing; the post-match analysis of the First Division match watched the day, before by Elite Referee of the match Matthew De Gabriele who answered all observations and discussed its key match moments with the participants; and Mark Deguara, a National Referee and a former Academy student, then addressed the students on the theme ‘Living the dream’.
Dr Angelo Chetcuti, the MFA Secretary General concluded the live-in by wishing all the students success in their future refereeing careers.
