Record of 11 teams for the BOV Water Polo Winter League

For the first time since its inception, The BOV Water Polo Winter League will consist of two divisions with 11 teams, including an ASA U19 selection participating ‘out of competition’.

‘We are delighted to witness the heightened interest in the BOV Water Polo Winter League’ said ASA President Joe Caruana Curran during a press conference held to draw the fixtures of the competitions. ‘This is the first time that the Winter League will consist of two divisions due to the large number of participating teams’.

‘The Winter League will coincide with the play offs of the European Water Polo Championships 2014 where Malta will face France in Montpellier on the 15th February 2014 and will play the return match at home on 1st March 2014’, continued Caruana Curran.

‘Bank of Valletta and Water Polo have now become synonymous, this being the seventh consecutive year that the Bank is supporting all local water polo competitions’, said Anthony Scicluna, Chief Officer at Bank of Valletta. ‘With the number of teams competing constantly on the increase, we are seeing a higher level of competition that is seeing bigger crowds flocking to the national pool to support their favorite teams.’

‘The close competition that has characterized the most recent competitions, with the leagues being decided in the last seconds of the leagues will definitely continue to raise the interest of the game among the Maltese public’, concluded Mr Scicluna.

The BOV Water Polo Winter Premier League will consist of 7 teams: Exiles, Neptunes, San Giljan, Sirens, Sliema and Valletta and will be played over one round.

The ASA Under 19 Selection will also be playing in the Premier Winter League.

Marsascala, Marsaxlokk, Otters and Ta’ Xbiex will play in the BOV Water Polo Winter First Division League and will be played over two rounds. Both leagues will start on 21st Leagues will see a number of breaks due to the commitments of the National Senior and Junior teams. In particular, no Winter League games will be played in April.
